The excitement that went through y/n did not go unnoticed to her. They went out all the time, hanging out whenever their shared issues with sleep kept Sal and y/n up late into the night. Their usual plan was to meet up on the roof or take a walk to the nearby kids park. It was always so silent at night, and having that company made y/n relax. Their antics in the dead street usually exhausted them both enough to go back, ready to rest just enough for the next day. But they've never done this before. Taking Sal's beat up 2001 Toyota Corolla out and going- as he explained- "anywhere" wasn't something they'd done before. Maybe he just didn't feel like walking, or he really needed to get far to feel comfortable. Or just maybe..
Tonight was different.
Y/n's phone screen brightens up, a message from Sal clear on the screen" I'm here ". She jumped up, grabbing a hoodie and throwing a zip up over it. Knowing Nockfell, the night was probably cold and misty. She checks herself in the mirror as she passes and for the first time during these night runs, she feels a little focused on her appearance. Y/n shakes off the odd thoughts, a familiar blush flooding her face. But, despite her brushing off the random inkling, she quickly brushes her hair into place with her fingers, tempted to clip it to the side. She folds and clips an f/c clip into her hair, holding down a few stray hairs and making her look the little bit neater. After her small outfit fiasco, y/n grabs her satchel and sneaks into the hall and quietly puts on her converse sneakers, thinking about the areas Sal might be planning to take her. Was he wanting to GO somewhere or was it just for the feeling of driving? These questions taunt her as she gets up and locks the door silently behind her, like she has many nights before. She texts Sal back, as she practically skips down the stairs. " Omw : ) "
As y/n suspected, the air outside the apartments was freezing. She shivered and shoved her hands into her pockets, while her eyes scanned the parking lot for the light silver car. She spots one with the lights on, seeing a familiar shade of blue on the head of someone leaning against the door. There he is, she thought to herself before jogging over. "Hey" He says, voice rough with exhaustion "The heating's on if you wanna get in" y/n sighs in relief. "Thanks" she replies, reaching for the handle and climbing in. She takes in a breath looking around. She'd only been in this car twice, and both times were drives with the gang to a gig or pop up band. Both times, she was always squished between Ash and Todd. Larry kept getting the front seat, and now, y/n was in the same spot. As she sits, she understands why he'd fight so roughly for it this whole time- it was comfortable. As she relaxed into her seat, Sal's door opened and the car shook as he settled into his. They both sat silently, looking out the windshield into the dark night. Sal was the first to break the silence "Are you- uh- warm enough?" y/n nodded, looking over to him and taking in his appearance. His slightly shabby hair rests down to his shoulders, the strands covering his face like a curtain from her. His prosthetic sits by his feet, which didn't phase her. He usually didn't sleep with it on so he didn't bother putting it on during their outings, knowing it would be them alone. "Do you wanna play something?" y/n's eyes snapped up to look up at him, blinking quickly out of her daze "What?" Sal huffed out a laugh, shifting in his seat and rubbing his hands on his jeans "I- uh- meant do you wanna..put in a cd?" She hums in recognition, her gaze following his pointed hand to the cubby containing his cd collection. "Yeah, sure!" She goes through the options, the click of plastic cutting through the silence. As she picks, the tension in the car started to make her nervous. His hand reaches for the keys, turning the car on with a low hum. Why does he seem more nervous than usual? Is she overthinking it? Or was this night really different to the others?
"I like The Goo Goo Dolls" y/n murmurs, pulling out the Dizzy up The Girl cd from the collection. Sal huffs, smirking slightly before snickering in a soft tone "You're such a poser-" she scoffs before shifting to face him "You asked me to pick!" his smirk turns into a smile his eyes glistening in the low light of the night. She laughs as he rolls his eyes, turning his body to the front "Fine, fine go on" He pulls out the parking spot as the first notes of 'Dizzy' ring out in the car. They cruise for a while, the song loosening whatever anxious tension was first in the car. Y/n looks out the window, humming along softly. She's just grateful it's not awkward or uncomfortable. The thing about their hangouts is that she never feels like she has to speak, like you do in the day with everyone else- because he isn't like everyone else. He understands that sometimes company is enough, for them, it is enough. Y/n zones out for a while, leaning her head in her hands as she looks out the window. Her mind begins going over their memories together- sitting close on the swings in the winter, laying on the cold tile floor in the lobby in the summer- it really was just them resting with each other, one chirping out random thoughts every now and again. It was comfortable, it was nice. Something as light as a blink pulls her out of her thoughts, her eyes scan the glass realizing her breathing had fogged up the glass. She leans back, head against the headrest slightly embarrassed before getting an idea. She writes her initials on the glass with her finger, then his. Around it, she doodles stars, a cat- and after seeing Sal's shirt again- the Sanitys Fall logo. From her satchel, she pulls out her Polaroid camera, snapping a shot of the scene. "Careful" Sal warns, his voice gruff "the flash on that is fuckin' brutal" she laughs, muttering a small apology. The small photo develops, the picture leaving a small smile on her face.
The cd continues, y/n nodding along to most. 'Bulletproof' begins, and y/n animatedly shifts up in her seat "Ooo- this is my song" Sal glances over, smiling softly at her excitement before turning it up slightly. As she drums her fingers on her thighs, completely lost in the music- Sal begins glancing to his side every now and again, watching in amusement as she sings to herself in a hushed tone. It's like this for the entire song, her excitement rising and falling with the song's progression before bowing dramatically at the end. Sal laughs at this, a smile stretching across his face while showering her in praise before she joins him in the laughter. For the rest of the ride, it is like this- light and fun. Before long, the main road shifts into a single lane. Y/n speaks up, curiosity getting the best of her "So, where are we going? It seems you know." he huffs, mock glaring at her in the rearview mirror "Can't you just wait for the surprise?" She scoffs, crossing her arms and leaning back in her seat "Surprises? You clearly don't know me, Fisher." He laughs at that, lightly punching her on the arm. She punches him back a bit rougher, getting a louder laugh out of him "You could be taking me out to the forest to kill me for all I know-" "Mhm, and for all that knowing- you seem to have come along willingly." She smirks, shaking his head "Don't worry, I'm not gonna behead you- I just know a spot." Y/n rolls her eyes, looking back out the window to see the road ahead was elevated and that they were approaching a cliff side. Just as that thought came to her head, Sal took a left onto a dirt road. The ride was a bit bumpy, but after a while of driving aimlessly in the dark, the car pulled to a stop, lights reflecting off the metal barricade stopping them from driving off the cliff completely. Sal turns off the car, the hum from the car gone and replaced with the light wind and crickets. "This is Hickory Heights" he explained "a small sectioned cliff near the lake- I found it once while driving aimlessly." Y/n hums, looking out the windshield. It's dark, all the light being absorbed by the metal barricade. "I can't see much-" she says. "I know" he replies "So step out quickly." Just as he said that, his door opened- his lanky limbs stepping out. Taking in his actions, she shifts to take her seat belt off, before following him into the night, shutting the door behind her. The night was still cold, but not as brutal as before. She stretches her arms, letting herself regulate before looking over Sal to see he was already on the hood of the car with its headlights now off, staring out over the cliff and into the distance. She follows his gaze and her breath catches in her throat-
Over the grassy cliff side, the town over sparkles with lights and activity. Their buildings were slightly taller, their size slightly bigger than Nockfell. To y/n, it looked like a galaxy just for them. Sal turns his attention to her, seeing her eyes glisten with her mouth slightly slack. He smiles to himself, proud that he could make her that happy. He calls out her name, and her eyes turn to him. As she does, his heart stops- the words he was about to say suddenly lost. Those eyes that he watched endlessly, we're now looking at him like he was everything- and at that moment, it felt like it was just them left on earth. They stare for a while, not wanting to look away, before Sal nods his head towards the empty spot next to him on the hood. Y/n looks down at the spot, frozen in place for a second before taking a step forward- then another, before finally resting next to him, both their eyes focused out to the shining lights in front of them. They sit in silence, taking it all in. After a beat, the silence is broken by Sal's gentle but deep voice "It just has a way of making you think, huh? Zone out, almost like going into another world" y/n nods, letting out a breath she didn't know she was holding. "Like you could step off the edge and be there in an instant" she replied, before thinking it over "That sounded really cliche" she laughs out, pulling her knees to her chin. Sal let out a huff, leaning back on his hands "No, I got what you mean" he reassures. They let a beat of silence fall over them, the faint sound of the CD playing inside the car. "Do you ever think about leaving this place?" y/n scoffs "When am I not?" Sal laughs at this until y/n turns to him and punches him in the arm gently "I'm serious! Stop laughing!!" she returns to her spot, wrapping her arms around her knees and looking back out at the city below. "I think.. I think I wanna go back to Cali." Sal quirks an eyebrow at this "Why? You've already been there." y/n hesitates for a moment, not knowing exactly how to respond. "I just..I just feel safe out there. It's home." there's a knowing silence between them. At that moment, the words seemed to hang in the air between them, a bit of a personal piece of y/n shifted the conversation almost entirely. But she still felt comfortable, thanks to his gentle gaze. Sal seemed to sense the tension in her after admitting that, because he then reaches out with a soft touch, leaning onto her shoulder, pausing a moment to let y/n pull away. When she didn't, he rested his head on her shoulder "I get that..It took me a while before this place felt comfortable at all. When I first got here, I never considered it my home. I'd go back to Jersey in my head, the sky blue walls of my room, watching the light through the sun bleached curtains..my mom." He swallowed harshly, looking out into the distance. Y/n, wanting to show silent comfort, leaned her head on top of his and placed a timid hand next to his, gently making circles on the back of his palm. "But then i'd open my eyes, see the dingy walls of my room, and I'd realize that that part of my life is just..over. I'm not the same person I was- farthest thing from. Now, I hope for a chance to get out and start again. Start anew. But.. If I wasn't here at all, I would have never met Larry or the great people who came after- Todd, Ashley..you" he laughed slightly under his breath "So..I'm happy right now, and I know I'll be happier." he shifted slightly, turning his hand upward, so their hands were tangled. "Are you happy, y/n?" she sat still, pausing for a moment to think about the question. She took in a deep breath, looking out to the skyline, up at the stars, down to him on her shoulder. At that moment, she felt pure peace "Right now? Yeah.. I am."
They sit together for a little while longer, letting time pass by. Sal shifts slightly before realizing that y/n fell asleep- he froze, focusing on her slow controlled breaths. He felt his heart melt knowing she was comfortable with it. Sal sat up slowly, letting their positions swap so she was now resting on him before gently shifting off the hood and picking her up off it. After a slight struggle with the door, he lays her down to rest in the backseat- quickly making an effort to turn down the stereo awkwardly. He sat next to her for a while, relaxing back before looking down at her and feeling his breath catch. She seemed so peaceful, her h/c glistening in the minimal moon light that seemed to gravitate toward her. Sal sighs through his nose, nodding to himself as a thought crosses his mind. She's the most beautiful person in this run down town.
After about an hour of sitting together, Sal listening to the music silently, he hears the rustling of leather next to him. He whips his head around, taking in the sight of her all over again "Are you okay?" "Yeah-" she replies groggily "Did you carry me in?" Sal shrugs as if to say its no big deal. "Thank you, Sal. That's... really sweet of you" She sits up, legs crossed facing him. They hold eye contact there for a second, the seconds feeling like hours. Y/n felt her heart race, watching the way his eyes bore through her- almost hearing her thoughts. "Thank you for..taking me out tonight. I loved it" She said, breathlessly. He simply nodded, keeping his eyes locked on hers, praying she doesn't look away. Not now, not ever again. The two stay looking at each other, the familiar riff of 'iris' filling in the quiet space between them. Y/n's eyes flicker down instinctively, her eyes locking with the lips that were parted away and torn on one side. The scarring that runs across his face is slightly more red than the pale skin right against it. Sal could feel her gaze, it leaving sparks in a line where her eyes trailed- this was unlike any moment they'd had together before. Like magnets, they gravitated toward each other without worry, almost without choice- like it was meant to happen. The lyrics spin around them like a breeze in the air, the words repeating in their heads again and again "I'd give up forever to touch you.." Y/n's eyes raise up back to his, now seeing something that wasn't there before, a glisten, a sparkle. A want, a need, a feeling that seemed infectious, the rush of emotions now flooding her- body, mind and soul now fully taken in by him and him alone. They gravitate closer-
They are interrupted by the loud buffer of the CD acting up, the speakers scratching out an ear grating sound. The two pull back quickly, y/n brushing her hair back while Sal awkwardly shifts forward between the seats, turning off the stereo and letting the car fall into silence. They sit still for a moment, not looking at each other, not speaking. Looking out two separate windows in the back of his car, something changes in the world around them, something shifts. They both know exactly what it is. Sal takes in a deep breath, picking at the delicate skin around his nail "do you- d..do you wanna get going?" she nods quickly, feeling her face warm up without even having to look up. They both step out and shut the back doors, leading both into the cold air and back into the front of the car, back in the place where they were just a few moments ago. If only I knew, Sal thought, that this was going to happen to me. I would have done this earlier.
The car starts up, and they move out of the cliff side, at each other's sides, feeling the warmth from a moment ago swirl around them. Y/n keeps her eyes out the window, watching the night pass her by. She shifts her vision, looking at Sal in the reflection in the glass. His blue hair flickers in the warm light of the passing streetlamps, lighting up his silhouette. The cold hue of his pale skin and bright hair made y/n's heart skip, the moment of their 'almost kiss' playing over and over in her head. Did he think of her the way she would think of him almost every night? They get back just as the clock on the dash hits 4am, Sal pulls into the drive and turns off the ignition. He takes in a deep breath and leans back in his seat, his eyes turning toward y/n once more, noticing she fell asleep against the window. He breathes out a smalls laugh, a smile stretching across his face before reaching over and tucking a strand behind her ear. Her soft skin radiates warmth against his ice-cold hands, the contrast sending shivers to raise the hairs on his arm. "Y/n" he whispers, conflicted between waking her and disrupting her peace "Y/n? Baby, wake up-" she shifted, sitting up against the chair with a yawn "..did you just call me baby?" she giggles tiredly. He froze for a second, completely stunned at how his energy deprived brain could think that up "I did not- uh- I-" he laughs at himself wiping his eyes with both hands to hide his blush. She laughs a bit harder, taking her seatbelt off and zipping up her jacket "Don't worry about it, baby" she teases, now shifting to face him. She kisses him on the cheek, letting the moment last a while longer before pulling back with a smile. "Goodnight, Sal" she climbs out the car with a grin into the cold, leaving him stunned. He just stares at the space in time where she once was, eyes shining and ears ablaze in the dark. His heart races, the beats flowing through his whole body. His name on her lips echos as the door closes shut behind her. He whispers into the night-
"Goodnight, y/n.."
