Future Scope of Tissue Expanders Industry by 2026
Tissue expansion is a technique used by plastic, maxillofacial, and reconstructive surgeons to encourage the body to grow additional skin, bones, or other tissues. Other biological phenomena such as tissue inflammation can also be viewed as expansion (see tissue inflammation below).

Skin expansion is a common surgical procedure used to grow additional skin through controlled mechanical overstretching. It creates skin that matches the color, texture, and thickness of surrounding tissues while minimizing scarring and the risk of rejection.
When the skin is stretched beyond its physiological limit, mechanotransduction pathways are activated. This leads to cell growth and the formation of new cells. In some cases, this can be achieved by implanting inflatable balloons under the skin, as shown. By far the most common method, the surgeon inserts the inflatable expander under the skin and regularly injects saline solution over weeks or months to slowly stretch the overlying skin. The growth of the tissue is permanent, but retreats to some extent when the expander is removed. There are also topically applied tissue expansion devices. These have the advantage of being inexpensive and not requiring surgery to implant under the skin.
