“She is a British former track-and-field athlete, active between 1984 and 1997, who won the 1992 Olympic gold medal in the 400 metres hurdles. Between 1992 and 1994, she won every international event open to her, claiming Olympic Games, World Championship, European Championship, Commonwealth Games, Goodwill Games, IAAF World Cup and European Cup golds in the event, and breaking the British, European and World records in it. She is the only female British athlete to have won all four ‘majors’; Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth titles and the first female 400 metres hurdler in history to win the Olympic and World titles and break the world record.”

Sally Gunnell (b. 1966) is a former track and field athlete from England. She is the only female 400 m hurdler to have broken a world record and won both the Olympic and World titles.

She is the only female British athlete who won World, European, Commonwealth and Olympic titles. She has won 24 medals in international competitions, 16 of which were gold.

In preparation for Moscow, SPIKES has tracked down 10 great world champions to ask them about their first golden moment. At the 1993 World Championships in Stuttgart, Great Britain's Sally Gunnell won 400m hurdles gold in world record time. Take it away, Sally...

“It was almost a relief to win the world title as I had won the Olympic title [in Barcelona] the year before, and I hadn't felt that well in the ten days leading up to the race.

"I was doubting I would even run at all. It was a relief to feel I was the same athlete I was from the year before but it was still a very different feeling to the Olympics.

"We received a Mercedes Benz car for winning and I also bought myself the biggest bar of Swiss chocolate I could find that night – and I ate it all!”
