This is a Sally Appreciation post. I just love her so much, and I forgot how much I did. I really relate to her in so many ways: I’m awkward and gangly (I was even more so in high school), I’m nerdy and really good at school (she clearly is great at chemistry and creative as well to come up with that silver nitrate project!), I’m lonely and often feel unlovable. I really haven’t changed much in my nine years out of high school, so my insecurities and low self-esteem haven’t really gone away--perhaps just shifted focus a little. I had one solitary crush in high school that went nowhere (we were great friends, but he just didn’t like me like that and I’m not even sure he knew I liked him like that--he’s married now anyway :/). I even kind of look like her, with my short blonde hair and glasses (Jaime and I are also the same height, what a coincidence)!

I love her excitability and enthusiasm, and I see that in myself a lot. I love her kindness and sensitivity, especially when Joey’s “cuh-rying” in the choir room. Her little speech after she tells Joey she likes him, about having only herself to give in return and wishing she could give him more really moves me, and Jaime’s acting also helps with the emotions. Maybe that’s why I like “Even Though” so much, particularly Joey’s line: “I thought I wanted someone perfect as could be / when what I needed was the one who was perfect for me”. Sally’s not perfect--and neither is Vanessa, but Joey’s blinded by his sexual attraction to her--but only then does he realize that Sally has been the only one there for him when he needs it most and is truly the one for him. Sally’s insecurities aren’t fixed, but she feels better about herself when she gets returned affection. And if someone like Sally can find someone to be in a solid relationship with, then so can I, right? I’m not desperate for a relationship by any means; I love living my single life...but it gets lonely sometimes, you know?

TL;DR Sally is amazing, Jaime Lyn Beatty is amazing, and I relate to her more than I realized.
