Introducing: Motoi Yamamoto Post 9
The artist that I wish to introduce to you today is Motoi Yamamoto (a mouthful I know but it's worth it). This artist intrigued me because of the nature of his work.
You see, this artist works in salt installations. You heard me right; salt. He will sit for hours in a gallery making vastly intricate designs with salt crystals. From his website, (http://www.motoi.biz/english/e_top/e_top.html ) one can deduce that all of his salt is raw salt taken from the sea near his homeland. We also figured out in class that the artist would need to control the air currents in the gallery so the work would not be disturbed.
I was intrigued by Motoi Yamamoto because if I was this type of artist, I would want to preserve my work in some way. He sits for hours working on these (which I'm sure would cause back aches galore) but after the exhibition, the work is destroyed. After one of his exhibitions, he returned the salt ceremoniously back to the sea. As an artisit/photographer I want my work to be enduring if I am to work hours on end on it.
