Jonas Brothers Summer Rain 480

This is a video that the Jonas Brothers made for their TV series Jonas L.A. The show obviously took place on the sunny beaches of L.A. In the video however, they show L.A. with a much more tropical climate. The sudden summer downpour portrayed in the video is highly inaccurate. I only wish that summer rains would fall on Cali.

On January 17th 2014 governor Jerry Brown finally declared a drought emergency in California. Although, the actions did come a bit late, California is happy to finally have the government take action. Good job Jerry Brown, even though you should probably not promote the ALS challenge anymore.

Why do you think people who don't live in California don't understand how severe this drought is? do you feel like the rest of the country is wasting water? How do you feel about that campaign to put bricks in your toilet?

I think that people who are not in California don’t understand the severity of the drought because they haven’t experienced it. This goes for people on the west coast as well. We don’t understand the severity of snow storms because we haven’t experienced it.

I feel that the population as a whole is wasting water. Putting it in bottles and forcing it into pipes just takes it out of the ecosystem.

Putting bricks in toilets does reducing the amount of water per flush. This has not been a big thing in my city, but there are special water saving toilet handles that do the same thing, but better.

Context

My town in California, well it's a city, but my town is too hipster to call itself a city. That would be too mainstream. Most people who are from California are proud to be. This helped to pick my topic. I wanted to educate the East Coasters on what Cali is going through. There are so many problems in Cali that are not common here. For example, droughts, gangs, immigration, education (yeah we just adopted the common core standards) etc. As a Cali girl I am all about educating everyone on how great my state is (it is the golden state after all) and making sure there is a Starbucks at every street corner. Starbucks can't survive in a drought so, we have to do something to save our Light Decaf Soy Coffee Frappucchino.

My parent’s room was the center of life in my house. As a child, I would get up and walk to that room in the middle of the night. I knew the way by heart. Once I stepped through that door, my toes were greeted by a soft plush carpet. It contrasted the feeling of the rest of the house where all the floors were wood. The first family computer was in that room. The only game on it was solitaire. I would mindlessly click the cards because I had no understanding of the game. The room was not big with the majority of it taken up by a large bed. I would lie for hours on that bed looking up at the skylight. I saw two shooting stars through that skylight and made a wish on both of them. This room had two windows that where very creaky and they would stick when one tried to open them. These windows did not have a screen so when they were open one had a perfect view of the garden. I remember the cat fell out of the window once. She was fine, but my dad wanted to put a screen on the window. My mom said it would disturb the flow of the air if there was a screen. The window has remained without a screen. One the shelf there was a lamp and a jewelry box made by my great great uncle. The kids were not allowed to touch them unless my mom was in the room. This room always held comfort and mystery that I found enchanting as a child.

Joe On The California Drought

Me: Have you ever heard of the California drought? If so, where did you hear about it?

Joe: What do you mean the drought? I know you don't have water. Is it going on right now? It is like the depression? Is it happening all at once?

Me: What do you know about the drought?

Joe: Well, you guys don't have water. People feel guilty about taking showers.

Me: Why is it a problem and what are people doing about it?

Joe: It is a problem because they don't have freaking water. They are putting water restrictions into effect to help fix the problem.

People ask why I came to UMASS. This is why. I wanted to experience something different. I still don't understand how people on the East Coast survive in the snow. I will learn sooner than I want to.
