Water flows over the rocks in a quiet manner; riffles creating a beautiful rippling noise as the water travels over it. The sun shines over the Earth in a golden hue at this point. Golden hour was one of the most beautiful times to see the vast prairie in. Bison roaming in the distance, birds fluttering through the sky, and deer wandering with ease.
You were sitting in the grass looking out at the open grasslands that were empty except for the animals inhabiting it for miles and miles. Both of the horses were grazing by the creek as the two of you sat nearby in the tall grass. If it wasn’t for the horses, no one would know the two of you were here. Just existing in the vast emptiness, bothering no one, just in each other's presence.
The humidity and heat of the day was dying down as you two rested for a bit. Turning your head, you look back at Sam. He was lying on the ground with his hands behind his head and his eyes closed. His chest was moving up and down slowly. Rest came over him fast once you two stopped. Your eyes were traveling over his body taking in how beautiful he is.
He had taken the braids out of his hair earlier today, so the dark strands were splayed across the ground. Some pieces were tangled with seed heads as time passed while he rested. The wind had knocked off the small reproductive parts of the grasses surrounding him. His brows were relaxed, but the creases of constant furrowing remained evident on his forehead. A gentle reminder of how bright it was, and the constant confusion of random things you said to him.
A small smile ghosts over your lips as your eyes trail down further. The golden rays cast over his face making his jaw appear even sharper than it already was. You shifted down to your side, and propped your head up with your left hand while your right rested on the ground.
His lips were parted ever so slightly as he continued sleeping. You reach your right hand out and lightly graze your fingers along his jaw as you admire him. Little moments like these made it feel like it was only the two of you here. No other people, just you, him, and the Earth. No threats. No constantly having to look over your shoulder worrying about what will happen next.
There was no rush to wherever the two of you were going. You were just existing. He doesn’t have any destination, and neither did you. The way this was tracking, you two might just live your days out on the prairie away from everyone.
His eyes flutter open as yours trace the sharp features of his face. He turns his head towards you, and a smile creeps across his face. The lines on his cheeks deepen as the smile stretches larger. The sun reaches his eyes making them spark with bright streaks. Normally they were a dark brown, but in the sun they looked like honey. They almost appear as golden as the rays casting on his face.
He doesn’t say anything, but his arms slide from behind his head. Turning his body towards you, his hands snake their way around you, and he pulls you towards him. A small laugh falls from your lips as he rolls onto his back, pulling you on top of him. A genuine smile stretches from his lips as he looks up to you.
Shifting your legs, you settle down on his hips, and your hands rest on his firm chest. His eyes were creasing as his cheeks pressed up from his smile. One of your hands leaves his chest to brush a strand of his hair from his face, tucking it behind his ear, you look over the long strands that were now intertwining in with the grass. You pick a seedhead from his hair and flick it to the ground.
Your fingers glide down his face, tracing his features, and your eyes follow the burning path you were leaving on his skin. The sun was now casting on your skin. Sharpening your features as it did to him.
Trouble appears in his eyes as they travel down your body. You know what that look means, and you weren’t going to complain about it.
