5x10 - Incident at Sugar Creek
“This is a song of reverence for our Mother, our Home, our Earth. Our prayer is that this song will inspire a deeper connection to walk with humility and respect for this great life that we have been gifted and are a part of.“
-Sam Garrett and Mollie Mendoza-
”You feel the Earth it starts to shake
Choosing love instead of hate
When you see we are the same
Then you know it's time to change
So now don't you run away
From the truth we have to face
No more violence on my plate
No more violence in my name”
Sorry (An apology) by Sam Garrett
take your time / take mine, my love
The Passing of a Cultural Icon
Actor Adam West passed away from leukemia at the age of 88 early this morning (06/10/2017). He and the endearing charm that he exhibited throughout his life will be missed.
We know what you’re most famous for, sir, but you had a varied career and we remember that too -- including stints on The Simpsons, Family Guy, The Big Bang Theory, multiple TV shows, film appearances and so on. Heck, you even fed me on a trip to Mars.
Many of us will retain fond memories of you, Mr. West
The Dinner by Herman Koch, translated by Sam Garrett ⭐️⭐️⭐️
I forgot I was so behind on finalizing my book reviews and posting them here, and it's entirely because of this book. I read this back in May and I still don't really know how to articulate myself but I'll try.
The Dinner probably deserves a higher rating but my ratings are subjectively about how much I like a book and this one was tough to enjoy.
The perspective character is so unpleasant that I actually found this book hard to read, especially the first 50% or 70% where the plot wasn't actively moving forward enough to distract me. I ended up taking a lot of breaks and reading another book at the same time to get through all of the setup and introspection. Once we get towards the end and everything really starts to move the book gets a lot more enjoyable. The main character is still deeply unpleasant, but that unpleasantness becomes easier to read when we see it interact with the plot and other characters in interesting and unexpected ways. But mostly, the climax of the book meant I wasn’t just marinating in the narrator's awful personality with nothing else to think about.
It's been long enough that I don't remember much else. I remember thinking the ending could have been better. I also think I remember that the protagonist's mental condition is never specified, and is maybe even implied to be a fictional condition. I think that was probably the best choice Koch could make if he wanted to go through with publishing this story as it is.
After learning more about Men Who Hate Women / The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, I always wonder about how much gets lost in translation and to the whims of English-speaking publishers. I did think this book was well-written enough to get 3 stars despite how unpleasant I found the narrator, but I'll never know if I'd have liked it better in the original Dutch.
