Newspaper in His Shoes

Do people really not get why someone might put newspapers in his shoes?

I grew up lower middle class, and I sometimes had to wait to get new shoes when I needed them because my sibling needed them more. There was never ‘of course you each can get something because fairness’ about anything. It was about necessity. I was lucky.

My mom grew up with even less.

She would have shoes so long she wore out the soles, down to nothing so there were holes under the pads of her feet. At school she’d go into the bathroom before she walked home and layer up toilet paper to put in her shoes to try to avoid getting blisters or rubbing her feet raw or burning them (she lived in Southern California).

As an adult, yes my mom grimace-smiles telling her story. Sometimes we laugh at the horrible things we made it through.
