10 Things to Teach Your Children Regarding Dog Bite Attacks

Approximately 75 million dogs live with human owners in the United States, and this does not even include the dogs that are strays or that live in shelters.  Given the prevalence of dogs, it should not come as an enormous surprise that more than 4 million people are bitten by them every year and that nearly 900,000 people are injured badly enough that they need medical attention.  More than 30,000 people are injured badly enough in the United States by dog bites every year that they require a stay in the hospital because they need some form of reconstructive surgery.  To make matters worse, the majority of people who are badly injured in dog bite attacks are children, particularly children who are between five and nine years old.  Given the severity of this problem, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or the CDC, has published a list of recommendations for parents.  These recommendations suggest lessons to teach children with regards to an encounter with a dog that may bite.  Below you will find those suggestions along with some additional thoughts in hopes that you will help your child avoid becoming part of this troubling set of statistics.

Another Rollover Tragedy - Passenger Killed When Vehicle Rolls in Henderson

Every car accident is a terrifying experience for those who have to live through them.  The flash of the other vehicle or object in a person’s field of vision followed by the deafening sound of crunching metal and smashing glass is enough to shake anyone up beyond the point of where they are rational, even if they are not injured.  However, rollover crashes are especially horrifying, as occupants of vehicles suddenly find themselves upside-down and in no control over their bodies.  They are also extremely dangerous as a high number of these accidents lead to serious injuries and/or fatalities. Sadly, yet another person has been killed in a rollover crash as a male passenger in a small vehicle was killed in a single-vehicle Henderson car accident that occurred on Monday morning at approximately 3:15 a.m.  The incident led to the fifth traffic fatality in Henderson so far in 2013, and the driver is being investigated for the possibility of driving under the influence of alcohol.  A link to a story describing the accident can be found here.
