sam interrupted is so good bc the horror of the ep isn't patients being violent. it's that the patients are being hurt by a monster but nobody believes them bc of their mental illness. it shows the patients as vulnerable and worthy of saving. it doesn't show them as a threat, but as victims. mentally ill people (especially those who experience psychosis) are more likely to be victims of violence than perpetrators, but it's so rare for them to be written as such and it's so rare for them to be written as sympathetic.

in this ep we also see ways that psych patients are mistreated. it's not the main focus of the episode, but we see several instances. drugging, restraints, separating patients from people they like being around, invasive intake procedures, their screams being ignored, and their "suicides" quickly being swept under the rug. a staff member being responsible for their deaths adds to this too.

it's not perfect, of course, but i really do like that the horror of it all is the patients not being believed when someone is hurting them.
