Books Read 2014
i didn’t get around to publishing my list yet this year due to my busy schedule. the list is also significantly shorter (a little less than half) because of the amount of reading i am completing for graduate school. i suppose i could also include the textbooks i have read on this list, as they are technically books and i have read them but i didn’t since the impression would be the same: dry, dull presentation of information that could be interesting. with that, here is what i read last year:
Title – Author – Overall impression (not a review) – Grade (1-10)
1. The Picture of Dorian Gray – Oscar Wilde – Well written parable of hedonism on the soul concluding a semi-obvious ending – 7
2. The Giver – Lois Lowry – Interesting insight into what is given up in order to live in ignorant bliss – 7
3. The Pigman – Paul Zindel – Dual-perspective story attempting to assuage the guilty feelings of two teenagers who befriend an old man – 8
4. The Poisoner’s Handbook – Deborah Blum – Non-fiction book detailing the birth of forensic medicine in America – 7
5. The Disappearing Spoon – Sam Keane – Non-fiction book displaying one man’s curiosity with the periodic table of the elements – 7
6. Nano – Robin Cook – Character driven story exploring the delicate balance between medical science, ethical behavior, and political policy with the most likely, albeit disappointing ending – 6
7. The House of Hades – Rick Riordan – Slower paced but more intricate plot primarily focused on the survival of two teenagers in hell (literally) – 6
8. The Blood of Olympus – Rick Riordan – The satisfying, concluding novel in the second series involving Percy Jackson that describes the never ceasing trials of heroes – 6
with that, i am off to frolic in the crazy schedules, intense assignments, and the story of my graduate school life.
