Yohe: A list of the Penguins’ top 10 prospects https://theathletic.com/1809014/2020/05/12/yohe-a-list-of-the-penguins-top-10-prospects/?source=user_shared_article
The Penguins' prospects aren't nearly as bad as you think. Here's the top-10 list.
Zach Aston-Reese, Dominik Simon and Sam Miletic added JOGA to their training this summer, which is a movement system made up of the benefits of yoga combined with the biomechanics of sport, created specifically for an athlete's body and mindset.
“The goal for their sessions was to piggyback on their training with O'Brien but also to give them the tool of parasympathetic nerve activation. As Webb explained, the players are in stress mode constantly - with their bodies impacted from sport, competition, travel and media. So they went through a lot of different relaxation and meditation techniques as well as the movement pieces. There is a lot of meditation and breathing work involved in those positions, so it was functional for them."It's actually a moving meditation," Webb said. "This helps them access that right brain pattern, that relaxation response, which will help them recover better. I think those athletes knew that they needed that because they're kind of all Type A and push themselves really hard. So they needed to counter that."While they understood the strategy to the sessions, that didn't mean it wasn't difficult."The first week was pretty hard, it was a lot of one-legged squats and holding lunges," Miletic said. "We couldn't really do it. But as it went on we got more comfortable with it and felt better both doing the actual JOGA and on the ice, too."
There isn’t necessarily the deepest pipeline right now,” said Chris Peters, who covers the draft and keeps tabs on prospects for ESPN. “It’s really difficult to build a deep pool without first-round draft picks. That kind of goes without saying … You almost have to get lucky to hit in a major way beyond the first round.” Only three of the 25 selections Rutherford has made as Pittsburgh’s GM have played in the NHL. Two of them — Kapanen and Daniel Sprong — have been traded. The other is Dominik Simon, a nice fifth-round find for the Penguins back in 2015. That said, both Peters and Button expressed excitement about three prospects the Penguins picked last year: defenseman Calen Addison and forward Filip Hallander, both picked late in the second round, and fifth-round forward Justin Almeida. “The biggest boom potential, I feel, is Addison,” Peters said. “He’s an extremely offensive defenseman. Plays a modern style. Can really stretch the ice with his ability to pass the puck and he has some creativity and skill. I think that’s pretty important. The size, even for defensemen, is starting to become less of a factor.” Peters also likes Kasper Bjorkqvist, a 2016 second-round pick who just signed a pro contract after three strong years at Providence College. The heady forward is one prospect who might be ready to join the NHL club this coming season. Peters believes that Sam Miletic and Jordy Bellerive, two undrafted signees the Penguins added to their system, have a decent chance of becoming NHLers, too. While Peters said that the Penguins have “one of the shallowest pools in the league presently,” he does think “there are going to be guys that pan out,” especially given their track record of maximizing the potential of less-heralded prospects.
