EMPTY APARTMENT

sometimes when the apartment was empty, i would turn my music up and sit in another room, pretending that someone else was there. once i even made a mannequin out of pillows and sheets, all tied in knots with candles for eyes and cigarettes for fingers, and we watched tv for hours, holding hands. when morning came and i left for groceries he followed me, pushing his own cart through the aisles. he asked if i could spot him twenty bucks for pizza rolls (which i did). then he started to go out by himself, to parties and to classes and to appointments; after a month i asked him why don’t you hold my hand anymore?

I HEARD YOU LOOKING

i heard you looking for someone new i heard you turning to green from blue

and i‘m sitting here alone with a bowl of soggy fruit loops, no wait, apple jacks, and a cup of cold coffee.

The chair creaks beneath me as if to confirm my train of thought and i shake the last doubts

just as i hear you coming down the stairs you’ve been in bed with the same thoughts as me.

we sit apart, across, opposite, at the table we bought at the market that first year.

but the table has lengthened since then. it’s miles long now. the steam from your fresh coffee, becomes a dense fog that muffles our words, as i finally say it, and you nod as if you’ve heard it ten thousand times before.

and then the silence. it becomes the only thing i can feel and it escalates, and it heightens, and it grows, not at a steady pace but ever faster, and it lengthens, and it weighs me down, and it builds up walls in preparation, but they have weak foundations and we know it, and it marches forward, and it lumbers like a colossus, so large that neither of us can slow it down, and it blinds us with its radiance, so that now we can only hear, we can finally hear not just the echoes of the thing but the thing itself day-glo bright set in deep relief so the shadows become legible, we hear it, like a high pitched ringing, that i’m not even sure is unpleasant, that i’m not even sure wasn’t always there, that i’m not even sure means what i think it means, that i’m not even sure will end any time soon.

and now the table is 3 feet by 4, and all i hear is your breathing, and i’m still sitting there, while i listen to you shower upstairs.

the sun is fully up when my feet touch the grass, the dew beginning to evaporate, and i find it necessary to lean on the trunk of our tree

to keep myself up. ants between my toes, a strange sensation but i leave them there.
