Sama Layuca - McCoy Tyner
LIstened to this composition yesterday on my way back from a piano lesson and loved the intensity of the movement between the horns, percussion, vibes and of course, Tyner.
The Sama Layuca dune fields are located in Mexico and composed of very fine granules of quartz. The action of the wind continually reshapes this landscape. Not sure if Tyner was influenced by these dunes, but the feeling of movement comes across loud and clear in this piece.
McCoy Tyner’s composition was recorded in March 1974 with sidemen John Stubblefield, Gary Bartz, Azar Lawrence, Bobby Hutcherson, Buster Williams, Billy Hart, Guilherme Franco and Mtume.
