“James what the hell did you do?” Balthazar's tone was frantic but hushed, and Jimmy could imagine him hiding in a supply closet somewhere just to make the call.

“I made my choice, Balthazar. Lucifer told me three weeks ago to make a decision.” Jimmy watched the countryside slide by through his train window, long past the repetition of the suburbs and city.

His friend heaved a sigh, like even the action of breathing was a great disservice at the moment. “James they're tossing your office, whatever choice you made it appe—“

“Appearances are often deceiving, Balthazar. You should know that.” Jimmy frowned as they passed through a tunnel and he was left looking at his own reflection.

Appearances certainly were deceiving. Just a month ago he'd believed the appearance of his older brother's business practices and personal life. Then he found one of numerous missing women waiting tables at a strip club his brother owned. He'd not have thought anything much of the incident if it weren't for the bruises covering the poor girl's body, the terrified look in her eyes when she saw Lucifer sitting with him in the booth. His smile was the worst part. Jimmy of course knew that his brother wasn't a saint, but he'd never thought there was a sex trafficking ring working underneath the façade of his family's multi-billion dollar business. One would have thought there was enough money to be made in industry, though Jimmy doubted it had anything to do with money.

Whatever it was about, he didn’t care. It didn’t much matter since he’d gone whistleblower and turned in enough evidence to the FBI that nothing short of an OJ-eqsue miracle could bail Lucifer out. Of course his brother knew it was him, he seemed to be the only one with a significant moral backbone.

Jimmy heard the muffled sound of a question being posed to Balthazar. “Bal, who you talking to?”

“My mum, we were commiserating about your poor performance last night.” Jimmy huffed a chuckle as his friend dismissed whichever lackee it was and began speaking to him again. “James, d’you know what they’ll do if they find you?”

Of course he did, this was his family, after all. He could still remember his father smiling with blood splattered across his face. Every one of his elders had done well to make sure he wouldn’t be a stranger to violence, wouldn’t be squeamish or fearful of blood. Sometimes he wondered what other children did for Christmas instead of listening to hushed conversations about who was or wasn’t going home after dinner.

“Don’t worry, Balthazar, I have a plan. They won’t find me where I’m going.” A grand sign lay a few hundred feet ahead and Jimmy squinted to see the first letter clearly, K. Kansas seemed far enough from New York.

“Where exactly would that be—actually, you know what? Don’t tell me. I really need to get off the phone before someone suspects something. Best of luck, old friend. I’ll miss you.” There was more to the last three words before the line went dead, the way they were rushed out and nearly panicked. Jimmy knew what Balthazar was saying and took a deep breath as the sign flew by his window.

“I love you, too, Balthazar.”

Samandriel looked over the stranger’s application, brows furrowed and lips pursed. Outside of looking fit enough for the rookie jobs, he didn’t have any sort of formal qualifications. He could muck the stalls, maybe. When he looked back up from the pale yellow form littered with coffee stains, he saw the unblinking blue stare of the potential farm hand. Occasionally the stranger’s eyes would slide around the room, taking in the plain brown walls and rough hardwood floors. He’d seemed really enthralled with the fields outside the windows and had nearly walked into the fence on his way in because he was too busy gawking at the barn. The man had clearly never been on a farm before.

“What’s your name, again? No offense, but I can hardly read your handwriting.” Samandriel set the form down on the antique desk at his back.

“Um, Castiel. I am not opposed to a nickname, though.” That was the other thing, the man seemed desperate. Not in the way an out of work farmhand usually would be, either. It was like his entire life hinged on getting this job.

“Yeah, you’ll probably end up with one. In case you didn’t know, Alfie isn’t my real name.” A small smirk quirked the side of his mouth, memories playing out in his head.

‘Samandriel’s kind of a mouthful, kid. How ‘bout Alfie?’

Castiel tilted his head, eyes squinting in question. “Strange. You look like an Alfie.”

A small chuckle shook Samandriel’s shoulders. “Yeah, that’s what Dean says. My real name is Samandriel.”

“Yeah, still not sure what your mom was smoking when she named you that, dude.” Dean sauntered into the room, stepping around their applicant to stand at Samandriel’s side. “So, what’s your freaky name?”

“Castiel.” Samandriel watched the stranger take Dean in, eyes sliding across the tall, broad body of the more experienced rancher. It was usually the reaction Dean garnered, drawing attention to himself sometimes merely by being present.

Dean made a small noise and nodded, clicking his tongue and crossing his arms. “All right, Cas, how are you with your hands? They steady?” Castiel nodded, looking to Samandriel with uncertainty. “Good, gonna get you set up learning how to do some basic repairs. Just handyman kinda junk. We’ll see how you do and move from there.”

i actually started the demandriel tag lmao. i started shipping it bc i love pairing dean with almost everyone, heh. samandriel was just a tiny precious creature who deserved better, he clearly loved humanity very fiercely, he believed in the winchesters and that was apparent when he was speaking to linda tran, he respected linda tran when she said she didn’t want angel involvement.

ok but Cami picture: pregnant Alfie is such a small and wiry person already so his belly pops at like 5 weeks and just keeps getting bigger and bigger. By month 7, moving a lot is difficult, most of his time is spent sitting, but he needs to be productive. So he starts knitting, crocheting, quilting, and watches reality tv like crack. Cas thinks all the baby stuff he's making is so cute (& cost-efficient), but Dean's getting tired of Alfie asking if he's heard about Kimye's baby.
