AUGUST UPDATE

While Brisbane keeps turning on the glorious late winter sunshine and we sift and sort through our Songs From The Start tracks and decide (eek!) which songs are going to make the cut for the album, I have a bunch of fun things on the go this August.

My sonic curatorial residency at Brisbane’s The Henderson Gallery (downstairs 300 Adelaide St, check it out if you haven’t been already - great wine list and OZ first nations inspired tucker) continues every Friday from 4-7pm featuring yours truly playing your favourite songs and mine delivered in a cosy away-from-the-world Brisbane CBD gallery environment. Bring your workmates down for a knockoff drink - I guarantee you’ll be back again!

Meanwhile I’m looking forward to chatting with ABC's Rhianna Patrick on Sunday night 11th August regarding our beloved BNE childhood hangouts - we’ll be joined by the ever erudite John Taggart of QNews - tune in to your ABC radio nationally online or on your dial from 7-8pm to hear us yarn. Rihanna will be taking calls, so if you have a particular childhood/teenage hangout you'd like to tell us about get ready to call in!

The end of August features back-to-back featured gigs - a lovely guest spot on the evening of Saturday the 24th supporting an intimate evening with ex Rolling Stones tour manager Sam Cutler up at Redcliffe’s Wilbury’s Books & Bits and an early morning featured performance on stage for the Bridge To Brisbane on the morning of Sunday 25th. TODAY IN 1969 THE ROLLING STONES PLAY ALTAMONT one of the most infamous rock festivals in music history. The idea of "free show" appealed to the band and all parties involves scattered around California to find a quick spot to play. Within days, the site was chosen at Altamont Speedway and the Grateful Dead joined the bill. The Hells Angels (Grateful Dead aficionados) were hired as "security," in exchange for $300 worth of beer, but nobody knew what this would entail. As airwaves leaked that the Stones were playing a free show, highways towards the San Fran area were dripping with cars; the local police force could not handle the amount of people. Fans abandoned their cars left and right as helicopters overhead saw a conglomerate of people walking towards the field.

Keith Richards along with then tour manager Sam Cutler went to the site the night before. "I like to look around, get the vibe and take it all in," Richards said. Even before the festival began, there was a bad taste in the air; batches of bad acid were passed around and Cutler began to get nervous. The next day, the shit hit the fan: too many people, a gang-affiliated security team, tripping hippies - even musicians began to feel the heat. "We're not playing," the scared Grateful dead said. After word got to the jam band how unsafe the event was (the tiny stage barely elevated form the masses), they got back on the plane and left. However, the Stones played and somewhere in the mix, spectator Meredith Hunter was murdered by the Hells Angels Tour manager Sam Cutler was left to clean up the aftermath as the Stones fled back to the UK.
