#wilmingtonnc #insurrection #samegame When I first posted the Thomas Nast cartoons it was to show the parallel of the 19th century and 21st century. I was building up to post about Wilmington, NC and what happened there November 10, 1898. This was to show that history can repeat itself. I never got around to it and well here we are. This coup d'état which happened on a state level was successful unlike the failed one that we just witnessed. The circumstances behind them both are eerily alike. In 1898 white supremacist were angry about the amount of black people in Wilmington that participated in the political process. With this past one at the Capitol you had white supremacist along with simple black people mixed in as well as other "POC". We're not clear on who all participated in January 6's coup attempt yet. But with Wilmington we know that the Wilmington Light Infantry, the Red Shirts ( white supremacist paramilitary terrorist outfit), and a mob of white citizens all conspired together. They used Gatling guns as well as their personal guns. At least 300 black people were killed and around 2000 were displaced. Black people, their homes, businesses, and a black owned newspaper were targeted. This was the first time in American history that elected officials were removed from office by force and replaced by unelected officials. All of this came about because a group of 9 men in Wilmington were mad about "Negro Rule". Sounds familiar doesn't it. That good ole fear of "Negro Rule" is what led us to the events of January 6, 2021. The way they spread their propaganda was with "The Caucasian" newspaper. This is what Marion Butler wrote in the Caucasian to rile the people up. "There is but one chance and but one hope for the railroads to capture the net (next) legislature, and that is for the nigger to be made the issue." So newly elected Democratic State Party Chairman, Furnifold Simmons built a campaign around white supremacy. He began working with The Secret Nine, who volunteered to use their connections and funds to advance his efforts. https://www.instagram.com/p/CJ7LJ0qBpox/?igshid=vxlbd7ngkm5o
