His hand gave a sharp flex — only to loosen abruptly, patting Sam’s nape in apology. “I just couldn’t do nothing. You didn’t do nothing to deserve it. It just- it fucking happens, and it’s shit, and I didn’t want you to go through it alone, so I told Roy I needed a few days and I bought a plane ticket. Simple as that.”
