69. Loyal

It was such a cliché, dogs being loyal.

But Jim had said to her, four months in, “You’re pack now. We’vegot your back just like family. Just – treat her right. And we’ll treat youright.”

But she hadn’t thought – not like this. Not with the fireand the blood, not on the battlefield. Not Sam standing over her, hacklesraised against the biggest, ugliest brute of a summon she’d ever seen in herlife.

Rough hands dragged her to her feet – James, the blood onhis face crackling with magic. GO, hesigned, and he pushed her back toward the trenches. When she didn’t move hesigned again, his face pleading – please.

So she stumbled back, head dizzy with the pain in her side,as Jim moved to stand by his sister. She would go back to the trenches and finda healer and then she would come back to help. She wouldn’t leave them.

She limped through the carnage, past her friends locked inbattle with Cerberus mages and Cerberus summoners and Cerberus shifters and –everywhere Cerberus and she wondered how they hadn’t been overwhelmed.

When someone grabbed her arm she almost fried them, stoppedjust in time to not kill Ashley. Her eyes were wild and she bore fangs andclaws dripping blood.

“Sam? Jim?” A wolf wasn’t suited to signing or lipreading,but she got the gist. She pointed and Ash squeezed her arm in thanks beforegalloping off.

Clarissa only got a few more steps and then stopped. Thepain in her side was so bad she could barely walk, but worse than that thethought of leaving Sam behind, of not being there if something – if either ofthem – she couldn’t bear the thought. If Sam was hurt and she could have donesomething to help, she would never forgive herself.

So she limped back even though she felt as though she wasabout to pass out. Her heart was pounding. What if she was too late?

But then she saw the cluster of wolfish flashes of teeth andbristling fur, three – or maybe four? – of them slashing at the ten-footmonster, moving in perfect synchronization. Maybe she had no place here, shethought, but then a bundle of fur separated from the group and shifted in frontof her, Sam reaching out to take her face in her hands and kiss her with equalmeasures tenderness and desperation.

And that was what they had, that was their moment, andsomehow it said I love you and I will protect you and I will always be by your side all togetherat once and they both understood. And then they turned to the battle to fight.Together.
