There was a hair. One white hair. Poking out right next to his ear. Sam must have been looking at it for close to ten minutes before he heard his sister knocking on the bathroom door and asking, “Hey, Sam? Is everything okay in there?” And, yes, Sam should be answering that. He should. He should talk through the door to his sister and assure her that he was alright. That nothing was wrong. Because it wasn’t. Quite the opposite, actually. Sam was thrilled. Most people wouldn’t be excited about their first white hair. Sam understood that. But most people weren’t Sam Wilson. And seeing that hair poking out right next to his ear? Sam had been waiting for this all his life. Because that meant Sam was ready. He was finally ready. After a decade of training, that white hair finally appeared. “I can apply to be a Santa,” said Sam finally, barely a whisper.
