Ok, so on back on the subject of BRAT mary running interference

But here's the thing

it's not SAMUEL C. It's not JOHN.

it's Mary.

She doesn't want them to talk to each other because she knows there's a 99.999999% chance Samuel C will wind up telling John the truth about the hunting world.

AGAIN.

We actually see MORE of Samuel C's ire directed at having hunters in his house. He's weirder about hunters than he actually is about civilians!!!! He's... WORRIED about civilians, bc in his perspective, once they're in the fold, it's HIS responsibility to keep them safe.

(And as for hating hunters... we later see this bluster get undercut by Sam as more ready than ANYONE to jump into Dean's cause against the demon... and he gets killed and tortured for his trouble btw)

but yeah

i think samuel c is THE most onboard in the family to tell john the truth at this point

(later in s6, we'll see him slip into lying to dean ofc, but as was pointed out, that was post-Hell AND post-extreme psychological torture BY azazel

SHE'S protecting over JOHN.

John is her bby girl, her princess in a tower, her boy in a cheerleader outfit

she will be his knight in shining armor from behind the scenes if she has to, but preferably, she'd like to lock him in a super-safe bunker of suburbia, far away from the supernatural

Shal, I think it was you that said Samuel would like Cas and it'd drive John crazy?

I have been known to say such things. :-) But also, I think other people are taking the torture-John football and running with it, because it's just so fun.

(It's only fair that John and Samuel like Cas, I think, because Mary, Dean, and Jack tend to be HILARIOUSLY harder on him sometimes.)

For the record, after my rewatch, I think Samuel might've ACTUALLY been a little soft on John when it came down to it. We tend to take Azazel's harshness for Samuel's, but that's not what we actually see. I get a strong vibe that Samuel was uncomfortable at the dinner table because he felt responsible for John's safety, and I strongly suspect he wanted Mary to come clean about their background.

But... at the heart of it all, it's Mary who puts John at the DAMSEL table, I think Samuel is firmly putting John at the KIDS' table, too. (John is someone to be protected.) And well. John feels that.

I feel Samuel would not do that with Cas.

He relies on Cas (FYI: So does Mary SEE ABOVE)... Which would drive John crazy. And yeah, it'd be extra EXTRA crunchy if John likes Cas too, because then he's outsider to both of them, when all he wants is to be respected by both. Secretly, or not-so-secretly, John wants the father-son-in-law relationship that Samuel and Castiel seem to have.

Aside // I also think it’d be funny if Samuel, like Bobby, is brainier than he appears... For flavor and contrast. Like maybe Samuel was a secret mathlete and actually understands Cas when Cas writes down a series of partial differential equations… Maybe Samuel and Cas start playing chess, and whenever John plays, he loses extra badly under pressure.

Cause I love watching John lose. It's funny. (BTW I think Cas is a sore loser, in so many ways.)

Overall, I think Cas would probably get along better with the Campbells... they're very "soldier class," and they have very big hero hearts, and that lines up with how Cas operates.

But unfortunately, when he does cross sides, I think he ends up siding with the Winchester chaos machine in the worst way. (SEE: When Sam and Cas team up.)

Aside// I mean, I'll say this: Henry is very duty-driven (like Cas) and despite Henry's weak stomach, kinda hyper-competent, so... that could be bad when they cancel out each other's intelligence.

(To be fair, ANY heart character can be dragged into the stupidity. I mean, just look at Samuel in season 6.)

ANYWAY YES. New and interesting ways to give John more disorders. And by extension, everyone else.

ANYWAY, we see that Samuel is a fixture in the family kitchen. All the kids love him to pieces. More than Deanna, SAMUEL is the one they expect TO BE THERE.

He's the one who stays.

wait wait. samuel would be mary in the bunker all over again. she holds sam at arms’ length bc she feels like her deal victimized him (“how can i face him?”)

and i bet that while samuel c and mary are quick that have a (big, ugly, emotional) fight and clear the air, samuel avoids john like the plague

john reads this as father-in-law rejection but samuel is over there quietly freaking out inside like, like “omg i broke that poor kid’s neck i’d rather die than look him in the eyes”

Besides, that I guess I didn't have a major point. I think the "real readings," are very fun sometimes, i.e. "This bad thing on screen is ACK-SHU-ALLY throwing a sheet over 'REAL LIFE' SHADOW CRIMES of <insert preferred terrible thing here>"

But if I wanted that I'd just read... true crime.

The appeal of a fantasy genre like Supernatural for me, is that until some of the later seasons, it never quite descends into the gobbly gook of "it was all a dream," or "Sam was schizophrenic all along" or "John was the real killer all along" or "Dean is murdering innocents in his delusional state (which eps like Damaged Goods ABSOLUTELY toes the lie dangerously close to) or whatever psy-pop is popularly this week, which can wind up undercutting the story.

(i.e. TLDR version is this -> Everyone watching a story knows it's a story. You don't have to finger wag them about it. This is closely related to one of my other pet peeves: explaining to a queer audience specifically how life can be disappointing sometimes *looking at Stranger Things for this one* as IF they're the section of the audience who doesn't KNOW that better than anyone else.)

l'll also tack on this Campbell meta, which resurfaced the other day! It's mostly about how Henry's suspicions and prejudices about hunters are received in a VERY different way than Samuel's insularity.
