henry standing up to leave, looking to sam, then the door. and striding away.

samuel accepting his fate when he hears the barn doors swing open. closing his eyes. prepared to rest and wait for the inevitable.

then hearing henry’s footsteps approach and suddenly he’s lifting sam over his shoulder without a word.

and sam has to contend with the fact that, yes, of course, henry would never leave him behind. and unlike he thought, he is not alone.

so basically I’m 99% sure that Martin kept Ma (and obvi Henry) a secret from Sara (and by extension Jehuda and Sam) despite having been contacted at least once, and he was aware of Sam’s existence in Kuttenburg but never once reached out.

Jehuda says of Henry, “That boy’s blood father denied him, just like he did to you [Sam]…” and Martin could only deny Sam if he was aware that Sam existed at all.

and when Sara learns Martin died, she says that it’s a shame he would never meet Sam. not that he’d never LEARN about Sam’s existence.

also, I think up until that very moment, Sara still held onto some small hope that Martin would come back to her. she made sure to never get remarried despite her father’s frequent attempts to set her up. she calls the father of her child “my Martin.” she knows that Martin looked for her far and wide, and sternly says “my Martin would never leave me.” idk maybe that’s her slipping back into old speech patterns or fondness once Henry starts talking abt him, but combined with *never* remarrying even after 20 years… I rly don’t think Sara knew about Ma. also was she calling him “my Martin” around Sam growing up? :(

all this, plus Martin obviously never told them about Henry. because Sam, Jehuda, and Sara are all surprised to learn that Henry was raised by Martin.

so like. idk how or when, but Sam must’ve learned about Martin being in Skalitz (or else he wouldn’t have made the connection the Skalitz blacksmith was Henry’s pa), and Martin must’ve learned about him in return (or else Jehuda wouldn’t have said he’d “denied” Sam).

some real “phone works both ways” absentee parenting from Martin smh. no wonder Sam is so fucking bitter towards him.

TL;DR Martin could’ve visited Sara and Sam at any point but didn’t. he kept his new family a secret from them, and Sam’s anger is 10000% justified (again)
