Comics I Read in 2025 (Part 2)
The Somewhat Incredible Jackie Boy #2 by James Asmus, Megan Huang, Dave Sharpe, Rober Meyers, and Michell Abounader
We return to the Altverse and now that Jackie Boy is starting to get a better handle on his super powers, we see him being more proactive in trying to help people. The people he saves still don’t take him seriously, but at least he is becoming a local legend. And after saving some students from being terrorized by a guy into local theater makeup that took it way too far, it seems like he might gain some more allies to help him. Though now that he is working with his scientist friend from the facility where he gained his powers, he learned that the substance that created his powers is also responsible for creating a black hole like substance in the things its touched, including Jackie Boy himself. So how will he fix it or what will he do with the limited time he is given? Hopefully we’ll find out in future installments.
Void Silver #2 by Alejandro Arbona, Suzi Blake, Andrew Dalhouse, Dave Sharpe, Robert Meyers, and Michele Aboundaer
Returning to the world of Marvin, we get a novel that clearly was there to set up for the rest of the story since it jumps like 6-8 years. Marvin goes in for his magic exam and to my surprise he fails, but that’s because his magic is clearly some sort of secret force that must be hidden. Still telling that to a kid who was hoping to get in is hard and it takes some convincing for him to go to the school as a notetaker-ish position. Seeing the scenes where he helps his classmates learn in their specialized areas while secretly practicing and study himself makes it clear he is powerful and as we get left on another cliffhanger after having used his magic in front of people, we’ll see what happens to him as the secret comes out that he actually is practicing. Part of me wonders if that will turn him into a more villain like figure which would be kinda interesting
Samurnauts: To the Max by Marc Alac Fishman and Mary McGuinness
Having really enjoyed the first collection of stories, I was glad to meet back up with Marc and team at Heroes Con and pick up the newest books. In this one we see that Master Al has made it to the 80s and since he is still nursing the loss of his former students, he’s reluctant to give new powers out even though he’s told a couple people. Still, his hand gets forced when a group of Russian clones (?) target him during a benefit concert he is forced to hand them out and this time its to an all women team made up of an eager to please mentee, his accountant, a pop star and her personal assistant, and a roller derby athlete. But we’ll have to wait until the next novel to see how well they work as a team and if they can recover the staff.
The All-New Samurnauts: Genesis by Kyle Gnepper, Matt Wright, and Marc Alan Fishman
This volume seems like a new jumping off point for the Samurnauts and so I’m curious where they are going to go given that the one set in the 80s is also just starting out. But this starts in 1947 on a Neo-Japanese space station where the human race is living. Al’s new team of Samurnauts seemed to have worked with each other for a little bit more, but they don’t feel bonded to each other. And they don’t seem to have mastered their powers so when an attack happens and they fail, it makes me wonder what they will do to step up. Guess I’ll find out in the next volume.
Saga Volume 8 by Brian K Vaughan and Fiona Staples
Felt good to be back in the world of Saga and though at the end of this volume we had heartbreak, I found the storylines in this one really fascinating. Like the fact that Prince Robot the IV and Petrichor considered changing their species by sharing the secrets the prince has does raise a lot of questions and I’m glad Hazel got to voice some to Petri since she did help her become comfortable with her winds and horns. And Squires plot about running away because he didn’t want that was a good b plot though of course it gets disrupted when the Will’s new handler comes around. I was sad she killed Doff, but appreciated his partner fighting on his behold. Still, with the Prince’s deal done and the paper being blackmailed at least they’ll be safe since the paper got blackmailed into not printing that information. Still I am sad that Marko died. He didn’t deserve that. Plus I’m curious how that will shake up the story.
