Cold start this morning. Environmentally and artistically. It was very cold in the garage. I rushed the drawing. I'm inside now to write. It's too cold to type out there. This is Los Angeles, for God's sake. It's not supposed to get so cold that I am unable to pursue my self-actualization. I started the drawing cold, too. I didn't warm up, I didn't ease into it. Maybe because I'm feeling plateaued I'm getting over-confident and I thought I'd just knock this out lickety-split. I really struggled getting the proportions and relationships correct. And it's such a simple shape. Or is it. The curve is deceptive...
This is my sanding block. I think I put this in my pocket at Mass Art. Or maybe it belonged to James Lesnick. Going through my tools is making me realize what a thief I am. Was. Am. I'm still a thief. I will be long into my golden years. I love this tool. Derided by many, it holds a special place in my tool box. It's so simple yet so functional. My favorite aspect, which is not evident in the drawing, are the teeth inside each “mouth” that bite the sand paper and hold it in place. Ingenious.
I read this week about one of my peers from Mass Art, Dave Schlafman. It was an alumni newsletter. Dave was in SIM with me and graduated a year early to go on and do amazing things with his life and career. Where did I go wrong? What were the fateful moments? Moving to California was one. I'm still here and still haven't recovered from the setback. I'll bet Dave doesn't live hand-to-mouth. I'll bet he never worries about making rent, has a plan for retirement, travels the globe, doesn't think twice about going out for dinner. Here I am, spending my weekends alone and broke. I'm not bitter. I'm just confused. I had promise. The major difference between Dave and I is that he is a people-person and I am not. He was affable, gregarious. I'm awkward, introverted.
I wonder if his parents were supportive? Mine were not and though I went my own way it still had a great effect on the course of my life. Because they were not supportive the fear of failure permeated all of my activities. This seems paradoxical, because you would think that if you don't want to fail you would do everything in your power to succeed and take risks. But not so. That fear caused me to make decisions that were within certain safe parameters.
Also, I crawled out of a pile of shit to get to this pile of shit. I suppose that's my lot in life. Perpetually crawling from one shit pile into another. Growing up in small town Mormon Utah was brutal. My education there was horrible. I learned nothing in school. Art was my only way out of that pit. At least the shit hole I currently occupy is better than the last. Optimism.
Here's the bad metaphor to accompany this bad drawing: I'm losing my edge. I was once sharp and rough and now the tumbler of life has worn me down. This project may be plateauing but my other drawings are not coming with ease. I suppose I just need to stick with them. Nothing is coming with ease anymore. Drawing, writing, learning new skills. The only thing I'm really good at now is drinking. And I can't even do that without feeling sick or ending the night in tears.
And it's so cold inside that I can no longer type. My hands ache. Woe is me. As Phil would say, these are first world problems.
