Hand Sanding
Hand sanding is essential for getting a great finish of a wood project. Machine sanding can make things easier and quicker by taking care of the bulk of the major sanding, but careful hand sanding will still be needed. Some of the basics of sanding by hand are presented in the videos below, but I'll also touch on a few things to keep in mind. First, always hand sand with the grain of the wood. This is important but not always easy to do, particularly in tight corners or hard to reach areas. Also, some woods with a more random grain pattern or figured boards can present challenges. In such cases, the key is to gradually increase the grit of sandpaper you're using so that any marks from the previous and slightly rougher grit are removed.
Second, be careful around edges and corners. A little too much pressure or time on an edge or corner can cause more wood to be removed than desired. Also, the more course sandpapers can leave marks that aren't easy to correct, so gentle sanding should be used in these areas. Third, use a sanding block for large flat areas. A sanding block will greatly help to ensure a more even and consistent sanding. If you simply use your hand, there will be higher pressure areas applied to the sandpaper and, consequently, to the project. This can lead to some areas of a project being barely sanded while other areas are overly sanded with any particular grit level. A simple 6 inch piece of a 2×4 can make a fine sanding block.
