Experiencing God’s Love
My husband stood beside me, and fear, the ultimate stealth weapon, sneaked into the room unseen. It wrapped its evil arms around us both. Something might happen while I am gone." That December 6th passage is from The One Year Experiencing God's Love Devotional by Sandra Byrd. She is the highlighted author on my social media today for 7 Days of Authors. Many of you know that my father has faced difficult times recently that have included homelessness, loss of friends and dementia. When Johnny and I concluded that the best route was to bring him to Maryland to stay with us, there was a fear of the unknown that overtook me. My supportive husband prayed that I would be able to calm myself prior to his arrival but it took about a week in to his stay before I could breath easier and enjoy the time. God knew exactly what it would take.
The first day that I picked up this devotional was October 14th and the verse there was Matthew 7:9-11, “Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him.” And that’s the thing... my father has throughout my life worked very hard so that I would have good gifts. But one of the greatest gifts my father has given me is teaching me or bringing people into my life to teach me that my Father in heaven has given me even greater gifts. No parent can give a greater gift than that so I could see my dad through God’s eyes and let go of my fear.
My mother wrote me and my brother letters last Christmas about our dad, his childhood and their life together. She explained that his parents never told him that they loved him and that he moved 13 times during his earlier school years. Therefore my father worked harder than most to make sure that we stayed in the same house for 17 years so that we would not have to change schools. With my father here with us, Johnny and I have dedicated our moments to telling dad that we love him and are grateful for everything that he has done.
My father had not been to church in years so the first weekend he was with us, we loaded him up and headed to our church, National Community Church. I had wished for so many years to be standing next to my father in church again that I was overwhelmed with the gift that God had given me in that moment. Then the pastor started speaking and God proved once again that He is with me and that He loves me. The passage was:
“Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him.”

Review: "Mist of Midnight" by Sandra Byrd
5 Stars
Mist of Midnight was one of those novels that drew me in right from the start. Byrd creates a vivid image both of Victorian England as well as life in India. Her narration flows beautifully, resembling in tone and voice such great Victorian novels as Jane Eyre, but moving forward in a faster and more reader-friendly pace. The plot was a perfect mixture of mystery, Gothic suspense and romance, which kept me on my toes and the pages turning. The novel is populated by a range of very well written and well developed characters. Even minor figures were introduced with an attention to detail that provided them with a vivid personality within one or two sentences. And looming over all of these characters was the question of if and how they are connected with the mystery around Rebecca’s doppelgänger. I found myself speculating about motives and hidden love affairs, scandal and the intricacies of English society as I was trying to solve the mystery alongside Rebecca. Not knowing who of the characters were trustworthy and who might be involved in the mystery was pure reading delight and I compliment the author for her clever writing skills. This book is already one of my 2015 favourites and I’m looking forward to the next installment of the series. 5 stars out of 5 for this exciting and beautifully written gothic romance mystery! I’d like to thank the publisher who gave me the opportunity to read this gem of a novel as an ARC via NetGalley!
