oh, man, this is such a tough question! for topicality and relevance, maybe the sixth extinction, elizabeth kolbert’s masterful nonfiction about climate change and the future of our little planet. she’s such an amazing writer, she makes true stories feel like action-adventure! 

Literature: Top 3 books you want to read this year.

this one’s hard, too!! idk about top 3, but three books on my to-read list this year are a long way to a small, angry planet (it’s been on my list way too long!), wuthering heights (i live for the period drama), and anne carson’s translation of the oresteia! i read the oresteia in my classics class in college and lOVED it, so i’m super keen on reading her translation

My birthday was nearly a week ago on the 13th, and I only just got back from my vacation yesterday. I'm only just now finding time to respond to everyone's lovely messages - I'm so sorry it took so long! - and I just wanted to say thank you so, SO MUCH for all the wonderful birthday wishes!! I had the birthday week of a lifetime at Disney World, though I can't say I'm not glad to be back home.

My queue should be back up to normal soon, and I hope to get back to daily BPC posts both here and Instagram too! 💖💖

this is a late response (it’s been a chaotic few days and i haven’t been on tumblr), but thank you so much!  i feel like it went really well and i got lots of questions and people coming up to talk to me about it afterwards.

i presented on jake sisko and cosmic black adolescence in deep space nine!! bringing jake sisko into the children’s lit discourse, his rightful place! (honestly, there’s so much to discuss with jake sisko, how has academia missed out on him this badly)

For real.  I said that’s not really the crowd I’ve ever hung out with and that I’m a nerd.  His response? “I used to be a nerd.”  And a little later he asked if I was sure I didn’t have any friends as fine as me?  I had no idea how to answer that question, so I just said that I think everyone is beautiful in their own way.

Really, though, it makes me so uncomfortable because this is someone who, because of their job, knows where I live, has seen my full name & phone number, and knows that I live alone.
