Cheri Honkala, long-time Philadelphia resident, local and international human rights advocate, is seeking the office of Pennsylvania State Representative of the 197th District in the Special Election.

The seat is vacant following the recent resignation of former State Representative Leslie Acosta after secretly pleading guilty to a federal felony charge in March 2016. This is the second democrat in a row to resign because of corruption. J.P. Miranda, the previous representative, pleaded guilty to having a “ghost employee” on the payroll.

Cheri can win; we can send Cheri Honkala to the Pennsylvania State House and put an end to this legacy of corruption. But Cheri needs a big push during these final two days, especially for her campaign's GOTV ("Get Out The Vote") efforts.

Here's what you can do:

Do you live within traveling distance of Philadelphia? If so, please consider helping Cheri in District 197 on Monday and/or Tuesday.

The day she announced she was running for Pennsylvania state representative, Cheri Honkala’s tires were found flattened.

Since then, this long-time anti-poverty activist has received death threats for daring to run in a city controlled by the Democratic Party machine.

Because of her show-stopping campaign to represent the 197th state legislative district that covers north Philly, Cheri has garnered the endorsement of labor union committees and leaders, neighborhood groups, local pastors, and national progressive groups like Bernie Sanders’ Our Revolution and Tim Canova’s Progress for All.

With just a few days left before Election Day, Cheri could use your help in becoming the first Green in many years to be elected to a state-level office.

Here’s why you should help: Cheri has a strong chance of winning in a district that has already burned through two legislators in a row, both of whom resigned after being convicted of federal corruption charges.

In fact, her Democratic opponent got kicked off the ballot because he didn’t even live in the district. Many Democrats who have spent years working to make Philly a better place are mobilizing behind Cheri because they are through with their party being used for personal gain.

Cheri is a legend in her own time, putting her body on the line repeatedly for the homeless, the jobless, the hungry, and the undocumented. For that she’s adored across her district.

The panicked Democratic machine has fought to keep Cheri off the ballot as well. So this race - in a district devoid of Republican voters - boils down to a write-in contest between a much-loved Green and several unknown Democrats all splitting the Democratic vote. Bottom line: This race is a microcosm of the national landscape - a political establishment in meltdown.

The 197th district that Cheri is vying to represent is one of the poorest districts in Pennsylvania, where residents are what Cheri calls a “walking health crisis” or one paycheck away from homelessness—that’s staggering to hear in the richest country in the world.

When Cheri wins, she has vowed to open up her offices to be a sanctuary for immigrants and homeless people.

To go even further, the $179 per diem Cheri would receive as a state legislator would go toward buying food for the neediest among us.
