I think I like them
Skadi and Freki Savarog
I want to talk about Skadi and Freki's relationship.
We know they are related by looking at the cards, but it has yet to be revealed in the show. It's going to be a surprise, like with Milo and Odward.
When we first meet Freki, Key tries to strike up a conversation with him, but one glare from him ends the conversation before it can even begin.
He literally only appears in the last minute of the game against the Knights, where he fouls Odward, not showing off his skills, but reinforcing his image of a terrifying, powerful, and dangerous person.
Only for everything to be turned upside down in the next episode, as Freki is terrified of Key, who has no control over his power. It's a shortcut: if Freki is afraid, then you (the viewers) know that what he's afraid of is powerful.
Side note, I find people hyping up his Tama (As previously mentioned Key and Pregrina in her own promo) amusing. From the meta perspective, love werewolves in our culture! But in the world the show takes place in, his Tama doesn't strike me as all that impressive. Other Tama allow for versatile moves and strategies, including flight and energy charges shots, Lilas can control giant vines, his sister is Elsa, and Pregrina can use the spirits of deceased players!
He's a huge dog. He doesn't seem to be able to use his abilities to their full potential. Can't maul anyone to death! He seems to have a heightened senses of smell and hearing (shown when he detected Ssyelle), but I don't see how this can be used in a game. Enhanced speed and strength lose their luster when, by anime/cartoon logic, every character has super strength and speed.
Unless there's something we don't know about, which is more than likely. They're hyping him up, and this show has never disappointed us with its brilliant animation and creative use of Tama. Let them cook.
When I first saw Skadi, I expected a typical "cold" character, but despite her powers and appearance, she is very kind and sweet. Makes you wonder how such a kind and heroic person can be related to such a seemingly aggressive and ruthless character.
He's been in the Shadows for almost 4 years. It's possible that under the surface, he's a good puppy who loves his sister, but looks scary and has to commit to the Shadows' reputation.
I wonder how much control he has in his werewolf form? It's a trait often associated with werewolves: difficulty controlling themself and maintaining their humanity, especially during a full moon.
When I first saw Skadi, I thought it was just a cool character design, but I started to wonder if she had accidentally frozen off her arm and leg. Sometime later, I learned about her being Freki's sister, and I was like ''What if Freki attacked his sister in his werewolf form, causing her to lose her limbs?''
On the other hand, if she really was mauled by a werewolf, wouldn't it be weird if she had a prosthetic leg that looked like a wolf's paw? Not necessarily, especially if she has already forgiven him. I would even dare to say that she loves her brother and shows him respect by imitating him, at least in appearance. But if their relationship is good, why aren't they in the same team? Well, just because they're siblings doesn't mean they have to be on the same team. The Dragons are a very powerful team, and it would be stupid not to take that opportunity. Besides, the Shadows already have a big team (The Knights have 5, The Bards and The Dragons have 6, The Roses and the Shadows have 7), with her as the 8th player, it would make the Shadows the biggest team, not a lot of opportunities to shine.
Think of the drama! The Dragons and the Shadows are playing their game. Freki refuses to play against his sister because of the incident, but the Dragons are demolishing weaker players (cough, Griffin, caught, Conan), so he has to play, but goes easy on his sister, and she's like ''Fight me at full power!''. The Shadows win, draw, or simply make the game much harder than it would have been if Skadi hadn't motivated Freki, so she's kicked out off the team and joins the Knights.
Of course, it's possible she was just born that way. But to me, it would be a waste of a great story and a showcase that other Tamas can be dangerous too, not just Key's Dragon!
Let's see what they'll do with them in the show. They might do something completely different. Feel free to use those ideas in your fanfictions.
It’s been a while since I have uploaded my art here on tumblr, but this piece is dear to me because it is a tribute to the EFD animatics. The last part (Wormwood) came out on Saturday and to say that I’m not okay is a massive understatement, lol. Ashivon, Sanga and Ahnmivah belong to @toastyglow ! Thank you Toasty for creating these wonderful characters and the animatics that are so dear to me. It has been a wonderful time.
