      he’d taken to  avoiding  the newest additions to the realm for the most part, instead watching from afar, wherever he happened to spot them. it’s not  new  for him to act this way, having done much similar with the other residents of the crystarium, for one reason or another. his name was rarely spoken  ( for those that knew it ), but his talent was unquestionable in its effectiveness,  &  often did he spend times in the lakelands in search of missing items, or anything else useful. 

      it’s one of these times he finds the redhead of another realm  ( the same as the exarch, he’s heard )  wandering the same lands -- or.. trying to fight a pack of gremlins.  seems about right.  those annoying rats were always an issue in hordes. quickly acting, running towards the scene as he unsheathes the katana from his side, helping the stranger-not-stranger  ( because at this point, who doesn’t know him )  dispatch the small horde of annoyances.

“Don’t get so irate, you’ll turn as red as your hair and that does not look like the complexion of a healthy man. Take my doctor’s knowledge on that.” For all the good her formal education and sort-of title are, she’s still took a wrong turning somewhere. Or maybe a few wrong turns because perhaps she read the map upside-down, which wouldn’t be the first time, and is the reason that Honey usually drives.

As it is, Honey’s in the passenger seat with her nose buried in a book and pointedly ignoring the argument between her wife-as-of-next-week and their... acquaintance-friend?-ally-kinda-sorta-ferryman. Atlas’ ‘janitor’. Naoko doesn’t quite recall the conversation leading up to all three vacationing together, seeing as everything between her and him was purely business-related from the get-go. At any rate, it’s an adventure to be had -- getting lost and stuck in the mud with one’s maybe-colleague-of-sorts who then launches into a fine argument of how Naoko’s a fucking idiot for not being able to read a map when the route is fucking simple.

     “How do you miss the beach? I can hear the beach, and the sea, from here.”

“How do you miss the beach?” she parrots glibly. “With great longing, I believe.”

Honey snorts and Rem’brin rolls his eyes. Naoko tries the ignition again before he tries to wrestle her out of the driver’s seat -- if he tries it; she doesn’t know him that well.

“Besides, you’re a redhead -- won’t you just burn up?”

          something tells him, he does not want to get on rem’brins bad side. not as though he’d been contemplating the idea, simply for the fact it’s not within his character to purposely do such a thing. ...& now, for the fact he’s ever so slightly afraid of what he’s capable of. giving a look of mild surprise behind the half mask, brows raised  &  eyes slightly widened, he stares for an awkward moment ---

          before giving a surely awkward silent laugh, shoulders falling with each breath. rubbing the back of his neck, a quick glance away, soon to return to rem’brin. giving a slight, understanding nod of his head.

The feeling of Dodson’s brain in her hands still lingers, like a ghost’s breath tickling the back of her neck, the heft of a paperweight but far slipperier. She gulps heavily. Mother was waiting on an answer, and she can’t remember if the man ever gave one. She had a recording running, so anything he said would be picked up, but her mind’s scattered. There’s no regrets over killing the man, or hurting him, making his face twist with the first experiment. But the act itself--

Kiyoko wasn’t wrong when she said that Naoko looks the most like Mother. The nose, face-sharp, hairline, mouth, even the scar on her face -- almost clonelike. It makes her want to throw up.

She barely catches a glimpse of her brother, a week shy of eighteen years, in the bathroom mirror before he speaks up, and yet she still jumps with a hiss.

     “There are rules you have to follow if you want to survive.”

“No shit.” Irritable. She wrinkles her nose at her reflection and glances at his, her expression softening into concern. She knows what he means, and what he understands, and it’s too late for any attempt to salvage anything out of this family. Or maybe she’s just a hopeful idiot. Yes, she’s always kept her foot in the door of that thought. “I know that,” she says, softer than the irritable snap. “I’m just taking a breather, that’s all.”

She wants to smash the mirror. Make a blade out of it and cut the original reflection. Just a little dream.

somehow     ,     throughout  the  separate  paths  they  took     ,     vaughn  was  still  rhys’  best  friend.  nothing  in  the  world  would  change  that.  not  even  bandit  clans  or  rival  business  drama.  he  lifts  his  hand     ,     a  fist  offered  over  that  was  met  with  another  with  no  hesitation.     ❝     you  look       ━━━━━━      ❞     different     ,     he  wants  to  say.  though  he  can’t  get  past  the  beard.     ❝     happy.     ❞

          the job was nothing less than a sprint headfirst into danger that, despite his abilities  &  swiftness, had nearly taken his life once or twice due to plain old ignorance. he’d given little thought to the danger that awaited him around every corner, the lurking sense of DREAD &  caution that seeped into his bones as he searched through the rubble for the lost items requested of him. even so, he was alive. 

          thanks in part to rem’brin. who now threatens to leave him here for his lack of cooperation in leaning against him. in all fairness, zyre’s a stubborn fool who’s used to working ALONE, even as he, at times, does yearn for a companion to be with. staring at the hume, studying his face for a long moment, only giving in with a scowl once the throbbing pain in his side turns to a sharpness akin to a sabers fang. reluctantly the drahn nods, letting out a silent, defeated sigh.
