18th of July 2026: Bluebelly Java Snake

After yesterday’s critter having not been found in several decades, let us today look at one where that was the case until they were indeed found again! This is the Bluebelly Java Snake (Tetralepis fruhstorferi) [1], also known as Fruhstorfer’s Mountain Snake [2], as they were named after Hans Fruhstorfer, a German collector [1].

They have a total length of about half a metre [3], and are found exclusively in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park on Java. Said location is also home to two very active volcanoes, which is why the IUCN marked them as Vulnerable back in 2011, an assessment they have not updated since. At the time, there had also only been 4 recorded specimen, the last of whom was collected in 1978 [2].

A study published in 2023 found however that previous records of other species had actually been misidentified Bluebelly Java Snakes, and that while in general the species is considered rare, locals would consider it quite common at Ranu Pani Lake [4]. A more recent survey of the area from August 2022 to May 2023 again found Bluebelly Java Snakes, though only at high altitudes (>1500 m) [5].

Details on their day to day existence aren’t very well known. Their frequency around Ranu Pani Lake suggests they may rely on large bodies of water, and as there are no high trees around the lake, they probably aren’t arboreal. Instead, they are more likely to be terrestrial or semi-fossorial. There have been inconsistent records on their activity patterns, and while most suggest that they are most active at twilight, the variety of reports could also indicate that they’re actually cathemeral, so active at irregular times of day [4].
