Makoto’s time outside the house doesn’t often take her to the island’s branches. They’re fun for a day trip, but most people seem content to stay within Spirale’s main city, and she feels similarly. Sometimes people need to get out of the house, though, especially when they start responding to texts with only one word.
Maybe it was the opportunity to explore a new place, or maybe it was because Makoto said she’d pay for lunch, but after a short boat ride across the sea, she finds herself stepping out onto the Sunset Circuit’s boardwalk alongside Victor Dumont.
“Name checks out,” she says, squinting into the sunset despite it barely being noon. “Man, you’re lucky you can just wear sunglasses, Vic. You don’t know how hard poor folks like me have it.”
It’s too warm for her usual coat, but hot enough that no one bats an eye at a crop top. In fact, it feels like a lovely summer day, and Makoto realizes she hasn’t really taken advantage of the peaceful season.
“C’mon, we’re burnin’ daylight,” she says, trotting down the wooden boards. “Don’t wanna keep the town waiting, do we Vic? I’m sure it wouldn’t be too hard to find a burger place somewhere around here if your stomach’s growling.”
He could use a day out, she thinks. They haven’t been talking as much lately, but Makoto’s canny when she needs to be. It’s subtlety that she lacks, but for now she can try to play it cool, for his sake.
