Happy Halloween! Scary Fact: During the US Civil War, advances in weaponry had far surpassed advances in medicine. Someone who was shot in the leg would have their bones shattered because the bullet would explode on impact, and the only way to prevent infection was amputation. However, it wasn’t much better because there was no anesthetic at the time. An average procedure took fifteen minutes. That’s fifteen minutes of enduring having your leg sawn off, the vessels tied one by one, and the skin stitched over the stump. Not to mention the conditions were terrible, and most often led to gangrene anyway! Even so, doctors on the battle field maximized efficiency by lining patients up in rows of beds and working through them in an almost assembly line-like fashion.
