#3547 - Santalum murrayanum - Bitter Quandong

One last species from September, and another step closer to the NZ trip.

Quandongs are in the Sandlewood genus, partially parasitic small trees prized from their aromatic timber, and edible fruit in the case of Australia's 'native peach' Santalum acuminatum. This one, not so much. Indigenous names for Bitter Quandong include coolyar and ming.

Sandlewoods are slow growing, difficult to germinate, and have largely been hunted to extinction in the wild. At least one species may be entirely gone.

Santalum is a scholar, mostly studying the occult and legends. He’s a prideful tabby cat, and a foil to plume- academic where she is instinctual and physically weak where she is inhumanly strong.

#1184 - Santalum acuminatum - Quandong

AKA desert quandong, or native peach. A partially parasitic plant in the Sandalwood family, that taps surrounding plants for nitrogen and some water. Found widely dispersed throughout the central deserts and southern areas of Australia. 

The fruit is one of the best known bushfoods, and attempts have been made to domesticate the species. It makes an excellent jam.
