Wednesday, May 19: Santo Rostro, “On the Edge”

“On the Edge” was true to its title, as Santo Rostro sounded a little more unhinged than most doom and sludge metal acts.  Spain wasn’t generally known for its metal scene, but the band did their part to ensure that doom metal existed in some capacity in every corner of the world, and the music certainly hit the requisite beats, leaning a bit more towards the sludge side of the fence.  Antonio Gámez’s roar was a bit jarring in this context, though it ended up making sense within the framework of “On the Edge”.  There wasn’t much more to it than that, but Santo Rostro executed this particular sound well while adding their own flair to the proceedings.
