West of the Rockies, elevation determines the weather—as you climb higher, the temperature drops. On a beach facing the Pacific Ocean, the wind blows salt and sand into your hair. They will tell you in either place that the weather may change on a whim. Cities have elevations too. In them, we live on top of and underneath each other, mimicking the natural landscape. From my 12th floor Seattle apartment, my living room window frames The Polyclinic and the lives that confluence within the building daily. Like the weather, the days of The Polyclinic are predictable and ever-changing. The doctors and nurses use the same offices and equipment, and the patients wait in the waiting room, yet the conversations, tests and diagnosis may change.
