Burnt Orange Scarf

My daughter asked me to make her a scarf.

"I want something that I can't find in the stores," she said.

I was excited about the thought of making her something unique. I decided on the following color palette for the scarf: burnt orange, blue, black, and white, with burnt orange and blue being the main colors. She likes blue and looks great in burnt orange.

I dyed merino wool in burnt orange, blue, and black colors using my own recipes. I made the black using black and grey dyes, so the black has a hint of blue. I made the scarf on a Saori loom. The warp was Saori wool pre-warp in black color. For the white in the scarf, I used a combination of white silk noil and undyed merino wool.

I woven to represents a span of my life.

人生の、あるスパン(ある期間、断片)を織って表現してみた。

that I moved to countryside of Japan, Yamanashi. That reminded me to live along with nature. I was living city and struggling. But I got lots of inspiration, ideas, and resources through spending time there. And now I graduated the life there and entered new span of life.

日本の田舎、山梨に引っ越した。そこは自然と共に暮らすことを思い出させてくれた。以前は街に住んでいて違和感も感じていた。でもそこで過ごす間、沢山のひらめきとやアイディアに自分の要素となる物も手に入れた。そしてついにそこから卒業し、新たな人生のスパン(ある期間)に入っていく。

This shows what I got before and how I will cultivate.

沢山の実験的な事を織って(縫いも少し)みた。これこそ今まで何をしてきて、これからどう開拓していくかを表している。

Great success in Sashiko Workshop weekend at Saori Weaving Studio @Loopoftheloom. I will come back to NYC next month, and to NJ (Gladstone) in October. Sashiko is not only about making one good stitch. There is always “reason (story)” for what we do. It is my pleasure to share the core technique & more stories while practicing the techniques. Again, it was such a good place to do the workshop. Do you know Saori Weaving? We are offering the Sashiko Stitching workshop in a great weaving studio in NYC, Loop of the Loom (@loopoftheloom). I have just started learning the Saori Weaving, but I enjoy many similarities between Sashiko and Saori Weaving - rooted to the Japanese culture. Another trunk sale (open to the public) tomorrow from 4:30 pm to 6 pm. Come stop by to check the Sashiko items & supply as well as the possibility of joining the Saori Weaving.
