Love that in trying to learn what NavigationView does. I immediately learn it’s been deprecated.

I found navigationview in THEIR CODE they generated for me. As an example.

#sarah coding #i have spent a solid like hour recently in limited free time efforts #to try and hand write gui code with swing #don't reccommend #in that time i got as far as: make buttons #not program them. no. bc i couldn't get past why are all my buttons on top of eachother #but then i remembered like. a fucking decade ago i used netbeans #i have a ten year old version of it still installed on my computer #high key #i made five buttons. struggled a little but it was in total prob 20 mins for me to make an exit button #and that was mainly bc i have to by hand #tell them that a button should have an actionlistener #like. why would i have a button unless i wanted you to pay attention if it gets pressed?#anyways this has turned my coding idea into a more viable thing #i will have to figure out this week if i can just open my IntelliJ project into netbeans #whether ill have some annoying issues there #but otherwise! maybe making a shitty gui for this three month side project will be easy #also it will make testing shit so much easier #bc rn its a command line project and fuck that's annoying #for testing at least #anyways big happy #now i can feel like i was productive today ig #im sure in a few days ill have complaints bc like. my brand is complaining about ides #but rn? it's on my good side #right up there with swiftui <3

We have solved one half of my problem with my current programming project!

Part one (completed): how get run outside of ide

(I fought hard with IntelliJ but figured out how to make jar file)

Part two (incomplete): how to make it open in command line without writing whole ass java -jar [file name] command

Me: awe man it's super annoying that this sql statement I created won't run in my code. the sql syntax is all correct, it's not throwing errors this is soooooo weird

me, ten mins later: ...I didn't fucking run the statement--

#sarah coding #i was like it's weird that it worked once and then never again #huh i wonder why #and then i remembered that uhhh #fun fact.#the way you run a sql statement in java #is by Statement stm = connection.createStatement();#then you run it. with sum.executeQuery(sql)#(that's one way - its the way i do it you can also do prepared statements i think. i just pass the string created as needed but--)#now normally you'd put the results into ResultSet obj. so that you can then do shit with what the sql query gives you #but im just running an insert query. so no results #so what i had done. was create a new method in my database class #so that i had one that ran queries with a printed result and one without #but. bc this one doesn't print. i removed the result set #except that means i also without thinking removed the execute query part #bc my brain is soup #so. basically all my code was doing was going #okay. run the method runsqlstmwithoutprint and hands it the sql statement #then the method went okay. establish connection to db #create a statement.#...cool! all done here's a print of success. and bc i WAS FUNCTIONALLY DOING NOTHING #It wasn't going to throw an error bc there really shouldn't be an issue connecting to the db #so anyways glad i spent like ten mins yesterday confused by that #at least i found it quick today #but also like. again. like 99% of coding problems are just #so fucking minor. and just a dumb mistake

i've spent the last what? few days? trying to figure out why none of my sql queries will work for searching with a specific date. i tried a few different way of typing the date. i stack overflow suggestions with like, different functions.

Today I sat down, trying to write the queries outside of my code, I managed to get a result. I was vainly like, maybe it's just a diff computer issue? IDK

Nope. I had two where conditions: the date and also the primary key/foreign key in the two tables.

...My where condition was between two different keys.

#sarah coding #i had been doing where each tables primary key was being checked #instead of one primary key and the other table's foreign key #and then being confused when there was no crossover #like you fucking-- LKFKJDFH #XDDDDDD #coding is exemplified by spending hours on one tiny mistake that is obvious #this is why you rubber duck or just. magically finally notice when you throw the query into a different program and stare at it

Sarah, local git genius, commiting and pushing a change to github and then realizing she 1. wrote a description for the wrong program and 2. hadn't actually opened the right repo so commited with that comment a completely different project

YALL I'VE FUCKING DONE IT!!!! (tldr: me talking more about the book app I'm working on)

In about, like, a week ish? Of spending around 15 mins coding, I've managed to make *drum roll*...the most barebones, ugly book organizing app known to man.

What amazing features does it have?

Creating a new book with title and author (Now with a save button that sends you back to the list once it's been made)

A detail view that displays the name and author in the dead centre of the screen

...that's the only thing I actually really added (deleting books on list was pre-written with the default code, so was most of the functionality (ie, 2 lines and a try catch) of the add function

BUT I DID IT!!!

I've been meaning to do this project for so long and I just, am so happy that in relatively little time I managed to actually get something made.

It's hard bc it's so validating that I'm less stupid and didn't waste some of my life in school to not be able to do this. but also like. this is the most simple shit?? XDDD
