Originally a dependency of the Ratanpur Kingdom, it later became one of the eighteen Garhjat states subordinate to Sambalpur. The state was located in what is now Chhattisgarh. The family of Sarangarh is of very ancient date and has preserved its traditions as far back as the Samvat year 148. According to tradition in Samvat 148 or 91 AD Narendra Sai Raja of Lanji in Bhandara had two sons Virbhadra Sai and Jagdeva Sai, the latter went and offered his services to Narsingh Deva Raja of Ratanpur who was then at war with a neighbouring chief On his returning victorious Narsingh Deva presented him with a khilat and conferred on him the title of Diwan together with eighty four villages in the Sarangarh tract. The family retained the title of Diwan through some forty two generations when Kalyan Sai (1736 AD “ 1777 AD) the then ruler obtained title of Raja on rendering assistance to the Nagpur and Sambalpur Kings. The rajas of Sarangarh seem to have had special warlike proclivities for in the reigns subsequent to Kalyan Sai we find them constantly called to the assistance of the Sambalpur rajas either to suppress rebellion within or to resist foes, thereby making Sarangarh a state of significant importance. Raja Sangram Singh, ruling chief of Sarangarh (1829 AD “ 1872 AD) was the first in line to be recognized as Raja by the British. . Source: indianrajputs.com .
