Boone is adorable. My boyfriend and I met with a local greyhound rescue and now we're set on adopting one next year. I'm so excited since I've always wanted one, and I'm doing all my research now. Any tips on what to expect when getting a retired racer?
Depends on the dog! Greys will have varying level of independance/prey drive/energy and personalities, most rescue groups do a good job of figuring out what makes the dog tick though and should be able to tell you facts about your dog - whether they’re a snuggle bug or more aloof, whether they like toys or not, if they’re cat safe or not, etc. Definitely let them know what you’re looking for in your dog so they can match you up with a good fit!
In general though, greys are friendly, people-oriented dogs with low energy requirements that like a good romp once a day or so but are happy to chill with you most of the day. They (and hounds in general) get a bad rap for being “stupid” but they really are not, you can practically see the gears in their head whirring about. It is true that they are not as eager-to-please as a collie or lab, but with some treats and patience you can certainly teach them obedience. Just don’t let them off-leash in unenclosed - they run way faster than they can think.
The first few weeks will likely be stressful for both you and your dog, as they are undergoing a major life shift. Treat them like a puppy if you can - frequent potty breaks, lots of positive reinforcement, a calm and quiet environment (if you can have someone with them for the first 2 weeks that would be ideal since some dogs are prone to seperation anxiety). They will start to show more and more of their personality as they settle in over the first few months and you will wonder how you ever got along with them!
