I'll say it again,why couldn't Sara Pascoe be my science teacher in school and teach me all of this!? Sex,Power,Money is slightly different to her first book; Animal. This one explores why are we programed the way we are,why is it okay for men to look at 50+ years worth of porn but woman can't look at porn? And sex workers including the famous question of "is it classed as rape,if i don't pay a sex worker?" It's quite interesting to learn how men from day one were taught about masculinity and how they need to be. How when they say "can I buy you a drink?" Means "I want sex in return" Whereas a women,we are simply supposed to say yes and never disagree. There is also a line in the book that has me curious and wanting me to give an insight. "I want to know if/how porn has affected children now growing up with it" From my point of view, I was semi-raised around porn. My dad has posters of naked woman up on the walls and he had watched porn when he thought i wasn't paying attention (that was awkward to walk into!! 🙃) Whereas my mum hated it. She raised me as "cover up and no one needs to see." Can you tell my parents are divorced? 😅 For me. I can sit on the fence and see both sides. I see the side of men thirsting over naked female centrefolds and the pleasure of masturbation. I see the side of "why won't someone think of the children!?" I also see why people want to be part of the sex worker industry and do their job. As I grew up,i got curious. I could ask my dad questions or I can be ashamed of researching for my answers. Those were my two options,I usually went for the latter. Back to the book..give it a read,it's quite insightful. So..uh..why couldn't Sara be my sex ed teacher or science teacher (actually both) when I was taught sex ed? When I was in grade 10, my male science teacher showed us disturbing images of genitals with different stages of STI's and said "if yours looks like this,don't have sex!" While in grade 12,one of my female teachers taught myself and five other girls how to put a condom on a banana.than said "if a guy claims it doesn't fit,his lying. Don't have sex with him" Reading this,i learnt so much more than my final three years of school taught me. I learnt how much of the female form is controlled by men even if men claim its not. We realise how little females know about their own body (a lot of stuff mentioned,i didn't know about!!) and also how normal it is for the way a woman thinks when it comes to sex. Than I got to the last chapter and just wanted to rage. It tackles rape and consent. A topic everyone loves to ignore but man,it was hard to read. Females should read this,if they haven't yet...or you know..re-read it.
