@tolkiengenweek day 7
The inventors of the three Elven writing systems: Rúmil of Tirion (the Sarati), Fëanor (the Tengwar) and Daeron (the Cirth alphabet)
Please please let me know if I made a spelling mistake in the scripts
"Âz ŠARÆRYÂN Walariweyarâz" - "I LOVE Valarin"
----
*âz - I
*šaræry-ân - love-PRES
*Walar(i)-weyar-âz - Valar-weave-nominative, "Valarin language"
----
I assumed that Sarati, an early script used by the Elves in Valinor, would be the unofficial script for the Valarin language. And it was beautiful.

hey so i know we’ve had the conversation multiple times about how the tengwar were probably just a fun theoretical exercise for most folks in valinor because, you know, until you introduce death to an immortal species with photographic memories, you don’t really need a writing system the way humans do - but i was wondering, and be patient with me here because i know this doesn’t hold up at all from a doylist perspective and also i know literally nothing about typography -
say you’re you’re the head of the chem department of a minor university on tol eressëa for folks who want to take a few classes here and there but don’t feel like making the trip to study full-time on the mainland, and you’ve just made a brilliant discovery at the end of your sabbatical. the university’s already made plans assuming you’ll be back to teach that year, but now you have to drop everything to go on the traditional lecture tour through alqualondë, valmar, and tirion to verbally share your discovery with the leading institutions in those cities. and it’s a pain, but you don’t really have other options unless you want to be stubborn and force them all to send delegates to your island, and that’s a great way to annoy literally everyone else worth knowing in your field. say you’ve got a great idea, and you want to share that idea, but for whatever reason it’s not practical to do it in person.
you could invent writing. but you also don’t really want to hand-write the same journal article fifty times. as a society, you try it for a few years and decide fuck writing, let’s skip straight to the printing press. rúmil of tirion has a decent system that works great for handwriting, but sometimes the vowels are in weird places, and you need /a lot/ of type to cover every case. (still better than handwriting though.) along comes this kid who says he’s got something better. stems and bows - a long stem, a short stem, one-bow-fits-all-double-up-if-you-need-two, a long line and a short line to show open/closed, a few vowels, a few special cases, and you’re off to the races. you can hold all the type you need for the entire alphabet in the palm of your hand. the vowels stay in predictable places now. much better than handwriting.
