Sadie’s (so far) planned arc is hilarious to me and to me alone
Sarah, at the beginning of Light Fingers: I can’t commit acts of unsanctioned violence. What does violence mean if it isn’t deliberate and controlled? I must stay in control. I can’t go mad… I must control myself!
Sarah, by the end of Light Fingers: I made a death trap for our anniversary, Margot <3 can we go use it on your enemies or does that have to wait until after dinner
I know I post a lot of serious stuff about Sadie/Margot but I hope it’s come across that they’re hilarious people to each other- between Sadie’s parody parlor songs and Margot’s dry sense of humor, they endlessly make each other laugh.
On the topic of Sadie and being dangerous, no one quite knows what to make of it. Sarah is polite, courteous, and more loyal than a hunting hound. And yet, there's rumors she stabbed a man- twelve times. Baseless, most likely, but the rumors seem to concern her more than they should.
Most baffling of all, she seems to be even less dangerous when she's with her employer, a woman who doesn't even remember how many people she's blackmailed or how many items she's smuggled items because the number is so high. If you were to suggest Margot keeps her in line, you'd be laughed at. Rumors are just rumors, after all. It must be the other way around, with Margot's short temper and Sarah's just-enough-composed demeanor.
More often than not, the charade continues when they're home.
They'll be working on their respective projects, pencil and pen scratching at the pages. They work in a companionable silence, often next to each other. If it is particularly cold, the two of them find themselves closer and closer to each other. After all, it isn't improper for a married couple to share a little warmth, now and then. They are, on paper, married. Sarah and Margot- chillingly domestic.
The charade is too easy to keep up.
'It's maddening!' Margot decides, after Sadie makes an offhand comment about how her eyes are twinkling, again. She only huffs, and tells Sadie she ought to get back to work. Sadie gives her a smile, and turns on her heel to walk towards her office.
'It's insanity' Sadie thinks, after Margot guides her around with a hand to the small of her back. Sadie turns, breaking her hold, and tells Margot she has a few errands to run. Margot makes a small 'o' with her mouth, and forces up a nervous laugh.
Sometimes, Margot gets too cold for comfort and pushes a shoulder against Sadie's. Sometimes, Sadie reaches over Margot to correct some notoriously faulty bookkeeping. Sometimes, Margot puts a nearly steady hand on Sadie's knee. Sometimes, Sadie gets a bit too tipsy and compliments Margot's eyes. Always, Sadie and Margot want, but-
One of them always stops, just as the charade begins to feel even more real.
Sadie and Margot's relationship is... well. Complicated is an understatement-
They're criminals and philanthropists. Margot is Sadie's employer. They are business partners in action, but on paper there is a clear distinction as to who runs and owns things. They're married. They're not in a de facto relationship in private. They pretend to be in a 'normal' marriage. They act like an old married couple anyways, even when they're not pretending. They're both convinced the other one will betray them at some point (they're both wrong). They're attracted to each other, and neither have admitted it. They're not in love, but they are. Margot would die for Sadie. Sadie lives because of Margot.
once the next plot point happens in Light Fingers, so will the Margot/Sadie arc! It’s in my docs as ‘no longer newlyweds’
Haha let’s try this magnet poetry thing for Sadie and Margot- oh.
