"You can't be serious."
Cassette Girl (usually referred to as Cass) and Nikku (a girl who preferred to give nicknames rather than receive them) had just sat down at a lunch table. They had to grab the leftovers of whatever greaseball they had to eat for lunch that day. The reason they were late? Comic book talk, to put it simply.
In fact, they never stopped talking about it. Even when they arrived at the somewhat crowded lunch table, some could still hear them chatting away about some comic series called Soda Pop Punk over the occasional break in their conversations.
And some were people like Skarlet. Which is why Skarlet asked such a question.
Skarlet knew Cass from a couple of her core classes plus her art elective. While they weren't the absolute ride-or-dies, they were considered quite close. Or at least people who sat with each other at lunch. She also knew Nikku but... a little differently. They were friends, sure, but whenever they spoke, they talked nothing but smack.
"Cassy," she said, putting her sandwich down, "Nikku? Seriously?" Cass looked at the bunny lady with a bit of happy confusion. Nikku, meanwhile, began to glare daggers at Skarlet, setting her own food down as well.
Cass gave a sheepish grin and looked between the two girls. Being completely honest, she couldn't tell whether or not they actually liked each other. On one hand, every word they said seemed sincere enough. On the other hand, Skarlet's lip twitched in that polite smirk. Nikku leaned to the side a little too much.
"I'm makin' friends, Skarlet," Nikku said, crossing her arms. "I thought you, of all people, would be soo happy for me." The bunny-lady in question guffawed and set her chin in her hand.
"I am! So, so very happy." Skarlet grinned, squinting. Cass stopped slouching, suddenly, and remembered that she was in this conversation, too. She leaned forward a bit to grab the attention of the two frenemies.
She plastered a polite smile on her face to hide all the confusion that was probably written on her face before. "Heyyy! So, uh... I'm assuming you guys know each other?" Cass asked, crossing her legs and interlocking her fingers. "It'd be nice to meet a friend of Nikku's!"
Skarlet sighed a bit when Cass said "friend". But, it wasn't a sigh of resignation or disgust, more like... amusement? Was she amused in a "I-couldn't-imagine-being-friends-with-her" kinda way? Or maybe like a "does-this-chick-really-not-understand-that-we're-friends" kind of way? Either way, it drove Cass nuts the more she thought about it. Luckily, Skarlet answered her burning questions.
"Yeah, you could say that," she took her chin off her hand and took a bite of her eraser chicken nugget. "Nick and I go way back."
It was Nikku's turn to sigh in amusement. "Yeah, we've been together since elementary. Skarlet also likes comic books, so we gravitated toward each other. And, don't call me that." She said, pinching her fingers together as she spoke the last sentence.
Cass chuckled a bit at the finger pinch. So they were friends... to some extent. That was nice to hear! She was glad this wasn't a situation where she was the mutual friend of two people who considered each other strangers or anything of the like.
There was a silence that washed over them for a minute. No talk about Soda Pop Punk, no talk about any new shows they planned to binge on a school night, not even a word about how shitty the school food was. Cass hadn't heard this kind of silence in a while, so it was a little jarring to hear it again. And yet, she still wanted to speak.
"Sooo," she started, "Do you guys wanna do something after school? Y'know... just for the hell of it?" Cass usually walked home with Skarlet and then lazed around at home all day. Sometimes she'd skate around town, other times she'd take off her limbs and give them a tune-up. While she usually never spent downtime with others, she wasn't opposed to it.
Skarlet took off her teal and white hat and played with it in her fingers, grinning. "Sure, what were you thinkin'?" She asked, picking up her plate to go and chuck it in the trash. Cass pondered for a second; she didn't really know how to answer that. She was just planning on having everyone hang out.
"I heard a froyo place opened up next to the comic store in the mall." Suggested Nikku, doing the same thing as Skarlet, and putting her food in the trash. "We could probably go to both since that's a trait we all seem to share."
"Honestly, Nikky, that might be the best idea you've had in a while."
"Girl, you told me that last week."
Cass laughed. She agreed to the idea with the rest and set up a time. Everyone would get home like normal and take about half an hour to do homework and other things they needed to do. At 4:00, everyone would meet up by the school's front gates. Then, they'd walk to the mall together and screw around there. To Cass, that sounded foolproof.
"What if someone's late?" Skarlet asked, putting her hat back on and crossing a leg over the other.
Nikku pushed her glasses like she was a nerd in an anime. "Then we leave you. Especially if you're the one who's late." She retorted. That earned a kick under the table from the bunny across from her. Cass made herself a small reminder: don't be late! The last thing she wanted was to get there at 4:15 and have no one be there. Even worse to think that she'd have to leave someone in the dust like that.
Right on schedule, the bell rang, which signaled the end of lunch. Kids who hadn't done so already were throwing out their untouched lunches. Mostly everyone made a beeline for the cafeteria doors, including Skarlet, Nikku, and Cass. Some stayed behind to wait for their friends or mess around. "So it's official? We meet at 4:00?" Cass asked one more time to clarify. The red-heads nodded.
Once they got outside the lunch area, their paths split. P.E. was one of the classes Cass had that she knew nobody in. Nikku had AP calc, and Skarlet had regular English. The only reason why she knew what class Nikku had was because of her complaining about some kid she sat next to prior to lunch. As Nikku walked off, she called out, "Don't be laate!"
And with that and her confident saunter, she disappeared around the corner.
Skarlet rolled her eyes. "See ya at 4:00, yeah?" She waved to Cassy, who waved her back. Just two more periods to go.

Cass had spent the afternoon working on homework her science teacher had given her class. That, and trying to decide if she should wear something other than her purple hoodie and hand-me-down gym shorts. She made up her mechanical mind and decided to switch it up a bit; instead, she wore a black skirt and a large purple t-shirt that sagged at her shoulder. It wasn't a revolutionary change, but it was enough to impress someone out there.
She glanced at the clock on her phone. 3:32. Plenty of time to kill. But with what? She certainly didn't feel like answering that open-response question about chemicals or whatever—she could save that for later tonight. She didn't really want to start leaving either. She flopped down onto her bed, arms sprawled out along her comforter. Cass stared up at her cream-colored ceiling and all of the glow-in-the-dark stars she had put up just last summer. She turned her gaze to her phone, charging on her side table. She walked over and picked it up, checking her notifications.
One new text message from Skarlet.
Expecting Skarlet (or, rather, what she had saved her in her phone as: silly dummy) to just be saying hello or asking her if she thought that blue-haired boy she sat next to in math class was hot, Cass opened her phone and opened the notification.
silly dummy:
Hey
can I ask u somethin
Cass began to feel a bit uneasy. She had the sense of impending doom slowly bubble in the pit of her stomach—it always happened whenever someone started with "can I ask you something." She took a deep breath. She was probably overthinking things again.
cassy:
yeah what's up dude
silly dummy:
So like
Nikku huh
... Nikku? Was this about what happened at lunchtime? About all the strangely polite smiles and backhanded remarks? Was Skarlet finally going to explain what that was all about? She knew they had a history from what they briefly said but...
cassy:
nikku? yeah she seems cool
silly dummy:
I mean yeah she is but like
She is pretty serious about her comic books n stuff
And I know ur a casaul fan of that stuff
*casual
cassy:
serious? Serious how
silly dummy:
Serious like
You know how my sister is like OBSESSED with that one hedgehog guy I can never remember the name of
And she basically gatekeeps him from me since we both like him
She's like that with her comic books. Especially Soda Pop Punk
Huh... alright. So Nikku took her fandoms pretty seriously, what's the harm in that? Cass had to admit that she was pretty obsessed with certain things. But that was when she was younger, in her preteens. Nowadays, she was a lot more chill. Her dad inspired that behavior, anyway.
cassy:
ehh that doesn't seem to obad
there's nothing wrong with liking something a lot lol
silly dummy:
Nono yeah totally
She just gets kinda petty about it
I just wanted to let you know
cassy:
ah okay i see
She did not see. How was Nikku petty? Well... if petty was how she tested Cassy on her knowledge of their shared favorite series, then she could guess she was a little petty. Still, Cass didn't want to admit that Nikku wasn't nice to be around. Besides, she had just met the gal. At the very least, Skarlet could let Cass decide for herself if she thought Nikku was petty. Just like that old cliché saying: don't judge a book by its cover or whatever.
Even though that IS how you choose a book at, say, the comic book store. That, or you read the reviews online or on the back. But are reviews on Soda Pop Punk the same as the ratings of a teenage girl?
cassy:
well, i'll keep that in mind lol
silly dummy:
Yup yup
I just wanted to let u know since I've known nick for a long time
She's just a nerd lmao
But she's cool
Cass had to admit, the whole thing was a little confusing. She couldn't tell if Skarlet actually liked Nikku or not, or if she should even like her herself. But this reminded her of when she got into another comic series not long ago.
She thought she disliked it, but she kept coming back. And before she knew it, she loved it. Maybe this would be the same way. Maybe, despite Skarlet's reviews, she'd love the alien in those geeky glasses regardless.
Or maybe she wouldn't. Who knows? Cass certainly didn't.
She set her phone down for a moment and looked out her window. It was a clear and sunny day at the cost of it being super hot outside. From her window, she could see children no older than seven dressed up like they were going to a pool with their family. Some bald guy was walking his dog with a portable fan in his hands, the dog wearing a little sunhat. A family of birds rested on a power line. She could hear the children laughing, dogs barking in the distance, and cars coming and going. Today seemed like it was a great day.
Cassy glanced at the clock on her phone and realized she had been staring for a little longer than she thought. It was almost 4:00! She jumped up and put her tennis shoes on, grabbing her hat and calling out to her dad that she was heading out and would be back by 9:00. Once she heard him say goodbye, she hauled ass downstairs, grabbed her water bottle, and exited her home.

"There you are!" Nikku called, putting a hand on her hip. Skarlet and Nikku were already at the school gates, waiting for Cassy. She found it a bit embarrassing to be the last one there, but she tried to pay it no mind. "Look at you on time. Thought we were gonna hafta leave you," she pushed up her glasses as she teased her.
Skarlet rolled her eyes and adjusted her hat. It seemed as though the others also dressed well for the occasion; Skarlet was still wearing her usual turquoise and white hat and jacket, but she also wore a black skirt along with some round, pink sunglasses. Her socks were now knee-highs, and she had some fingerless gloves to match.
Nikku still had her nerd glasses. However, her hair was tied back into a ponytail. She wore a yellow long-sleeved shirt and some overalls with white tennis shoes. The two seemed to be rather proud of their outfits.
Cass rushed over and greeted them both. "Hey! I, uh- I like your guys' outfits." She complimented, adjusting her hat to make sure it felt right. Nikku did a little spin in the air to show off her cool new outfit. Skarlet put her hands in her pockets.
"Thank you!" Nikku beamed, coming down to stand regularly. "Anyway, now that we're all here, we should head to the mall, right? They don't close for a while, so we have plenty of time to walk."
"Yeah," Skarlet agreed, already beginning to head in the direction of Finite Mall. It was where every teen usually went when they did things after school. The place had almost everything: an arcade, a food court, apparel shops, and, of course, comic stores. If you were a regular, everyone knew your name, at least.
The three ladies began walking down the street, admiring the beauty of their neighborhood. They eventually found themselves immersed in some random conversation that slowly morphed from one topic to another almost seamlessly. At that point, Cass had completely forgotten about what Skarlet had said. She was too busy seeing how wrong she was.
So busy that she almost didn't notice when they got to the mall. She stared up at the large letters that read "Finite Mall" and smiled brightly. She hadn't been back in a while, likely because school had been keeping her busy. Those damn statistics classes...
"Quit reading and hurry it up!" Nikku called, she and Skarlet were way ahead of Cass already. Cass stumbled a bit trying to catch up, grinning and trying to play it off as she usually did when she did something slightly embarrassing.
The girls continued their journey through the bustling mall. It had a clear window ceiling, so you could see the sky and all of the cloud patterns. The sunlight made the place feel much more alive. People were squeezing between each other left and right; everywhere you looked, it was populated. The shops were illuminated by the sunlight, ever so welcoming and teeming with life.
The girls decided to stop by the froyo place they talked about first. A short line, only a small wait. The three girls seemed very happy with their current situation. Would that change? Only time could tell.
