Funny thing concerning that whole “white family moves into haunted house” trope legit comes from the Satanic Underground Conspiracy theories that have been around since the 1950′s. It’s a false and damaging belief that attacked a lot of things, such as feminism, the LGBTA movement, rock and roll music, rap music, yoga (the use of Kundalini yoga is treated as most dangerous as it’s about “inner energy”), meditation, Harry Potter, Wicca, Pokemon, Halloween, Dungeons and Dragons, and even Saturday Morning cartoons. The main attack came after interest and use of “occultic” images and beliefs, mainly anything with magic, and wizards and witches as characters, ghosts and the paranormal. There was this train of thought that fundamentalist Christians tried to push that anything paranormal and supernatural was “evil”; ie that ghost that sometimes opens drawers in the kitchen? It’s a demon, ie watching Pokemon opens you up to getting pocessed by demons; interested in reading or investigating. The only way to rid yourself of the demons was to throw away your occultic things and become a Christian and embody yourself to Christ, or so they were throwing about. Much of the Satanic Panic was in truth sponsered by frauds and charletants such as Bill Warnke and Bob Larson, and some of the material and reading literature of that panic did lean into anti-Catholicism, Islamophobia (by way of Jack Chick’s stuff which btw isn’t isolated to Jack Chick’s comics), misogyny, and sometimes outright racism.
The whole Hollywood trope of “white family moves into haunted house” is basically a secular take most of the time but still is rooted in that, especially with the use of symbols that aren’t even rooted in Satanism (such as the Cross of Peter and the five pointed star).
