You know how it's often claimed that the Gnostics were people who thought Lucifer was the serpent of Eden and also good guy and God the bad guy?

Well, as far as the Ophites were concerned, the serpent probably wasn't Lucifer but he was the son of Yaldabaoth and his fall created worldly elements.

If the serpent really was the Devil, Yaldabaoth in this doctrine was his father, and he was not the Christian God. He was essentially a Gnostic interpretation of Seth Typhon/Yahweh.

By contrast, the Peratai had a very different view of serpents: they believed that the serpent, and the Draco Constellation, represented Jesus Christ as the hidden link between the corrupt world of matter and the realm of pure being that was supposed to be outside of it.

From that standpoint the Peratai certainly did not think the serpent was supposed to be Lucifer. Although you can see how modern Luciferians (especially the late Michael Howard) take up the same logic as the Peratai.
