I could barely find any fanart of Serafina from the Serafina series so I decided to draw some myself!! I tried to make her look like a scrawny child since shes only 12 in the books. I hope i portrayed her well!!

Re-reading Serafina and the Black Cloak because I recently visited the Biltmore and it was all I could think about while I was there

I loved the book so much, and I thought, when this is a technically a kids' geared audience story (protags are 12 years old and I in my early 30's)...how? How do I love this so much? How does the author accomplish this?

I mean I know no reader, what's the quote? No reader worth their salt trots along to a preset timeline...or something? But there IS a very difficult art to be able to accomplish a story that entertains all ages without anyone feeling alienated.

Robert Beatty does SUCH a great job at this. I'm trying to figure out how he does it. The protags process the world around them with that childlike fearlessness, but still make calculated decisions that don't feel too naive.

Robert also gives details that double-feature, which is something I am trying so hard to do myself. Like where he shows Serafina's age where she refuses to eat the grits in her chicken and grits meal, she only wants the chicken. The picky eater thing is a kid move, but later the only chicken preference matches up to what is revealed about her later, being related to a carnivore.

I could go on but this would be a massive essay and
