There’s a wonderful fierceness and resilience to Shallow, the latest single from young Los Angeles-based singer songwriter and producer Hana Vu, who’s in the midst of unveiling tunes ahead of the arrival of her debut EP How Many Times Have You Driven By. It’s hard to imagine that Hana Vu is only 17 when listening to her rich, deep vocals and her self-produced indie rock and post-punky art pop on Shallow, which exudes a whole lot of sophistication and confidence in its complex instrumentals and rhythmic drawl. It’s also hard to tell that she created her music in her bedroom, at least on resounding Shallows. Earlier bedroom pop track Cool, featuring Satchy, is a far different listening experience. It’s intimate and cozy with its mellow lulling Nilüfer Yanya and Yellow Days-evoking lo-fi indie soul. Hana Vu’s debut EP will be available on white vinyl and cassette when it drops on June 29th.
