Happy Pride! Can you do Beth coming out to her siblings and they’re like “we’ve been knew” and Beth’s annoyed bc she spent a long time making a heartfelt coming out (she even made a little presentation and everything) #allwashingtonsareattentionseekers

"If you keep flicking your eyes back and forth like that, you're gonna give yourself a headache. Halfway to giving me one, I'll tell you that much..."

"No I w - I'm not! I'm not doing that!"

"Oh yes you are. You keep looking between us like one of those cheesy old cat clocks. It's making me dizzy."

"I'm not - !"

"You're making me dizzy, Han."

As far as sibling-meetings went, Beth guessed this one could've been off to a worse start. It could've been off to a better one, too, but she knew how to cut her losses - especially tonight, when her stomach was already a little twisty. "Josh is right," she sighed, plunking down onto the loveseat, "you look like you think I'm about to murder you or something."

"Maim, at least," Josh snickered.

Hannah frowned. "I do not."

"At least!"

Instead of rolling her eyes or calling them morons - her usual way of going about things - Beth clapped her hands together once and forced her focus onto the middle-distance. It was how she'd been practicing, and like hell was she about to mess with that. Once she started, she knew, she'd just have to keep going until she'd said everything she needed to say, and if she got caught up on how they were looking at her, well...that might take a while. "I'm sure you're both wondering why I'm being weird tonight."

"Now that you mention it..."

"You aren't going to maim us, are you?"

"If you don't stop interrupting me, I might." She took a deep breath, focused twice as hard on the very edge of Mom's worst decorative pillow, and did it. Just...did it. "I'm dating someone. And I wanted you guys to know about it first and hear it from me, and not be, like, shocked when it turns out they're - " Fuck, why was her face getting so hot?!

Her pause must've lasted longer than it felt in her head, because her wonderful siblings stepped in to help her along.

"...imaginary?" Josh teased.

"...color-blind?" Hannah asked.

"Color-bl - what?" That did it. Their idiocy snapped her out of her head and she turned to them, eyes narrowed, trying to make heads or tails of what was going on in their brains. "Why would that...no, fuck that, I'm not asking - they're a girl, okay? A girl. I'm dating. A girl." Beth let them take the revelation in for a beat, then spread her hands out in a lame little ta-da. "I like girls. I've always liked girls. I - "

"Oh," Hannah said, and then shrugged, her entire body relaxing as she quit fretting long enough to grab the popcorn bowl off the coffee table.

Beth blinked. Reeled. Repeated "Oh?" and that's when Josh snorted.

"Did you...oh holy shit, you thought we didn't know. Quick, Han, surprised face! Just like we practiced!" He paused just long enough to pull a frankly horrendous Home Alone gasp then went right back to laughing like the dick he was. "Who do you think you're talking to, B? Huh? Obviously we know your swing is swung by the fairer sex - Hannah's your fucking twin and I've been reading your diary since you were ten. You wanna shock us with something, try a little harder next time."

For a moment, just the one, she felt the strangest sense of disappointment. Not that they were handling it so well, obviously - for that she was immensely relieved - but that they weren't surprised?! That she hadn't gotten a reaction out of them?! That she'd been gearing herself up to have this conversation for weeks and they barely even blinked?! No! Absolutely the fuck not.

This was her night!

Time to pull out the big guns.

"It's Sam," she said, loud and clear and full of shitty younger sibling pride. "I'm dating Sam."

"MY BEST FRIEND?!" Hannah sputtered, whirling around so quickly she nearly fell off the couch. "WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!"

Across the way, Josh's eyes narrowed. "The girl I've been crushing on?! Oh, that's low. Even by my standards that's low."

"Like I said," Beth teased as she snuggled herself up nice and cozy in the loveseat, her worries a million miles away, "I thought it'd be best if you heard it from me. But don't worry, I'll totally make sure you guys get front row seats to our wedding."

Kintsugi Kids

It’s hard to get Mike alone, Sam realizes. This is new information, because she’s never tried to do it. She doesn’t want to do it, but Hannah isn’t known for her fleeting crushes. If this is who she’s going to moon over for the foreseeable future, Sam needs to fulfill her duty as best friend and make sure he isn’t a total asshole. The thing is, she’s kind of written him off as a total asshole. -- Snapshots of Sam's evolving—and devolving—friendships over the course of two tumultuous years.

thanks for the opportunity to finally put my longstanding thoughts & headcanons to paper! this one got away from me a little lmao, but it was an exciting challenge, and i hope i've at least provided a glimpse into the complexity of these characters and their relationships!
